While this was a good overview of Russian history, each segment was view brief with details few and far between. I easily got through this in a single afternoon which shows how much it rushed through the history of an entire country.

Wish it was more in-depth

This was billed as a brief history and it certainly delivered on that. For a beginner to Russian History, as I am, this was a nice introductory book. It certainly leaves room for more in depth study with other books, which would be more focused on specific events or time periods.

I do have to say I found the narration lacking. I read a previous review calling it “robotic” and I certainly have to second it. In addition, he mispronounced many words. And not in a tomato/to-mah-to kind of way, but really straightforward things. Like mispronouncing the country of Belarus. Or the word debacle. Many other examples abound and it was a bit distracting.

Great info here, the tone of the reading gets kind of monotonous as it's "chipper-friendly" the whole time and not very conversational but as a whole Great listen.

Great Info!

Now I understand why the Russian people are as they are. What a history. It is brief, but the explanation comes through without a lot of fluff that usually drowns out the basics.

The title of the book best describes it: a very nice introduction to Russian history. The book is factual without the human drama and foibles that make history interesting,

great introduction

This was a solid, simple history of Russia, from its proto Russian origens, through to the modern age. As with any wide sweeping history, it simplifies events, but does so in a manner that adds to the narrative without grossly misrepresenting the facts.

the Narrator was easy to understand, but really should have examined a pronunciation guide before readijg some of the place and personal names.

A good, solid and easy to listen to instruction

provides an in-depth look at not just the history of Russia but it's development into the world power that we know from our age. fills in many of the gaps that one learns in studying the history of world war I and world war II.

intriguing and educational

I re-read this several times during January in the pandemic and it kept my attention. What I liked most about the story was the chronological structure and the focus on the big picture. It is too easy to get lost in details especially when writing about the Russian revolution, but the author successfully navigates through and beyond the teens and twenties of the 20th century without losing focus on the slow evolution of the Russian soul and political identity to bring us into the present with a 3 dimensional view of who is Russian and what is Russia. Recommended reading!
