About this listen

This is one of the most significant military books of the twentieth century. By an outstanding soldier of independent mind, it pushed forward the evolution of land warfare and was directly responsible for German armoured supremacy in the early years of the Second World War.

Published in 1937, the result of 15 years of careful study since his days on the German General Staff in the First World War, Achtung Panzer! argues how vital the proper use of tanks and supporting armoured vehicles would be in the conduct of a future war. When that war came, just two years later, he proved it, leading his Panzers with distinction in the Polish, French and Russian campaigns. Panzer warfare had come of age, exactly as he had forecast. This first English translation of Heinz Guderian's classic book - used as a textbook by Panzer officers in the war - has an introduction and extensive background notes by the modern English historian Paul Harris.

Well worth the listen. It offers good insights to German thinking, especially about their failures in WWI.

Use your tanks to blow up the enemy. Make sure you've got some smooth surface. Don't let them run out of ammo or fuel. Keep mechanics handy. Solved!

A lesson in common sense.

Guderian is highly readable and so well educated on this topic. As a leader or even THE leader in the development of tank warfare, this book is an important read for anyone hoping to understand this aspect of modern warfare. Most highly recommended.

Audible - IF YOUR LISTENING - please add Guderian’s second work to your catalog.

A Modern Clausewitz

Guderian breaks down early tank warfare in this book in detail that I haven’t seen bettered. The narrator did an excellent job I thought and I can only give this book my highest recommendation.

Great pre-ww2 insight

This was a bit of a letdown for those expecting an in-depth focus on World War II. Instead, the book primarily discusses World War I, with only brief touches on the evolution of tank warfare. Rather than a detailed look at tanks in action, much of the content revolves around how to use tanks effectively in strategy. While the book is valuable for understanding the origins of tank tactics, it didn’t satisfy my hopes for WWII-specific insights. Still, it offers an important look at the groundwork laid for modern armored warfare.

Not the WWII Tank Book I Expected
