Publisher's summary

In Adults in the Room, Yanis Varoufakis exposes the shocking reality of how power is wielded behind the scenes at the EU - and argues that only radical reform can save it from collapse.

Yanis Varoufakis became globally famous when was elected finance minister of Greece with a specific mandate to say no to the EU: to reject the forced loans and crushing austerity forced upon his country by the Eurozone.

The negotiations that ensued became one of the most spectacular and controversial battles in economic history. But no one actually knows what went on because Eurogroup discussions are held in secret. In this no-holds-barred account, Varoufakis reveals all: an extraordinary tale of brinkmanship and backstabbing that will shake the economic establishment to its foundations.

The future of the EU now hangs in the balance. As Varoufakis argues, the only way it can survive is if the truth is known, ushering in a new era of radical transparency and accountability in Brussels. Adults in the Room is an urgent wake-up call to renew European democracy before it is too late.

Founder of diem25 authors political biography

Yannis' political career will maybe never be extended, but that will also be a compliment to his integrity in the utter corruption of political EU described by him.

Brilliant!

This is easily one of the top 3 best books I ever read. The fact that such insider information on momumental and recent events is allowed to be published and reach the wider public is ground breaking.

Yanis brings a refreshing voice of reason and pragmatism in the ever more polarised and ineffective democracies of today. The story he tells in this books shows us a great deal of why we are reaching the boiling point.

Everyone interested in politics/economics should read it to understand how power is yielded behind the scenes and how we blinding walk towards the abysm.

eye opener

If you ever wondered what happened to Greece, this is the inside scoop. More than this, the book is a real life story of how the world around us would like us to believe in easy solutions and a world of relative truths - while finding the strength to stick to what you believe can be your crucible and the one thing upon which you draw strength at the same time.

I found myself angry, frustrated and aghast - the ordeal the author endured - psychological warfare - while trying to do the right thing left me feeling ashamed of the fascist oligarchy we have let replace liberal ideals through nothing more than apathy.

This book changed my perspective on democracy and what it means to participate in a democratic society.

thanks Yanis.

YANIS TELLS IT LIKE IT IS. MOST REFRESHING

I was totally enthralled by this book. Having following the Greek 2015/16 "Financial Crisis", and in particular watching Varufakis take on Schuebler, I was fascinated by the inside story.

Have to read! Gives you an insight of how a great project detailed

Europe is ours and we need to protect it! The insight we get in this book has the effect of an energiser and stimulate your will to be again involved in the great project of building a united and collegial Europe. For to long the European institutions have lived out of our view and have become alien. Reading this book will give you the will to hell get the European project back on track and seriously participate in a confederal Unione where the well being of the people is at the center. I personally loved it and would recommend d it to every one independently of your political views.

A rare marriage of political insight and literary flair

I knew very well before going into this book that Varoufakis was a learned progressive economist given an impossible job fixing broken country. I had no idea however that he is also a gripping author, taking inspiration from countless classic tragedies to help echo the one Greece went through during his tenure ( with a healthy dose of sarcasm towards the adults themselves of course ).

As expected, the book provides uncompromising insight to the inner workings of the European elite in a particularly interesting period of defiance and resistance to their rule. Quelling this crisis with the hubris, manipulation and incompetence that Varoufakis accuses the powers that be of should raise the eyebrow of any concerned Europeanist, irrespective of political preference.

The narration was very well done too, accents weren’t obnoxious and didn’t take me out of it at any given point. Although, I will say that as a Greek speaker some of the pronunciations did leave a little to be desired...Its to be expected of course and I think the narrator tried his best.

omg what a story!!!

this is a waterfall book. it will suck you in and you will feel simultaneously drowning and full of energy while falling to the depths of despair that is the eurogroup and the greek political reality. a great book about the modern interpretation of the morality of debt in the greek tragedy of 2015 to be understood within the larger context of the debt bibliography, especially Debt: The first 5000 years. Excellent. The narration is a bit underwelming especially on the names.

Indulgent_sometimes arrogant

I wish one of the adults in the room had edited some of the ego out of the book.
