About this listen

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's six exciting episodes of The Adventures of Superman!

In this action-packed serial, which aired from April 3 to 12, 1940, Superman is faced with the mystery of a missing explorer - and an even more mysterious sacred emerald of the Incas. Does the jewel hold the power to save the human race?

Clayton "Bud" Collyer plays the dual roles of Superman and Clark Kent, as he did for more than 2,000 episodes. The Adventures of Superman was a radio mainstay until its final episode in March 1951.

Critic reviews

"The long-running adventure serial...was one of the hallmarks of the Golden Age of radio....Superman was never able to fly as high on television as he had for an adventure-filled decade in radio's theater of the imagination." (Anthony Tollin, "Superman on Radio")

Truly enjoyed the storyline, loved the sea plane and the autogyro scenes with the lightning and the crackling fire as well. I would highly recommend!

Would you consider the audio edition of Adventures of Superman, Vol. 4 to be better than the print version?

even when superman has all the great strength of Kypton with him on earth, it is interesting that he can not save everyone. even he can not save everyone from death, especially when stuck as Clark Kent. but the reporter is able to continue to help in the end make sure everyone's able to get to a happy end.

What does the narrator bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

the old radio shows have really cheesy sound effects that helped with he imagination to experience the joys of the program

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, being a hour long it is easy to do

Any additional comments?

If you ever need to call for help superman is always there to give his aid. If you ever have a hard time trying to decide what to listen to, the ten minute shows are great to help give a short fun entertainment that will never grow old
