About this listen
Abandoned by her mother at age nine, Julia agonizes over her father's lingering death six years later. Now living alone with her saintly grandmother, Julia is crushed to learn that her longtime best friend and secret love has a college sweetheart.
Hoping to redefine herself, Julia attends a nearby university on an engineering scholarship. But when she returns home for Thanksgiving, unexpected events leave her vulnerable. Soon a sobering reality carries her through an Iowa blizzard - to begin a life she never planned.
Nicole Baart has received critical acclaim for her splendid debut novel, whose crisp prose is both "beautiful" and "evocative" (Romantic Times).

Story
I have something for you. When Quinn Cruz receives that cryptic text message from her older sister Nora, she doesn't think much of it. They haven't seen each other in nearly a year. But when a haunted Nora shows up at the lake near Quinn's house just hours later, a chain reaction is set into motion that will change both of their lives forever. Nora's "something" is more shocking than Quinn could have ever imagined: a little girl, cowering, wide-eyed, and tight-lipped. Nora hands her over to Quinn with instructions to keep her safe, and then Nora disappears.

But after he drops dead on their honeymoon, the whispers are salt on her raw grief. Especially when an orphaned, 11-year-old-boy shows up on her doorstep, looking for the grandfather he never met. Behind Ethan Allen Doyle's wary blue eyes lie heavily guarded emotions that unexpectedly tug on Olivia's heart, and she finds herself wanting to win his trust.

On the cusp of adulthood, 18-year-old Penny Carson is swept off her feet by a handsome farmhand with a confident swagger. Though Trent Taylor seems like Prince Charming and offers an escape from her one-stop-sign town, Penny's happily-ever-after lasts no longer than their breakneck courtship. Before the ink even dries on their marriage certificate, he hits her for the first time. It isn't the last, yet the bruises that can't be seen are the most painful of all. When Trent is injured in a welding accident and his paycheck stops, he has no choice but to finally allow Penny to take a job cleaning houses. Here she meets two women from very different worlds.

Would you consider the audio edition of After the Leaves Fall to be better than the print version?
Probably. I loved Johanna Parker's performance - she became Julia. Her performance made a descriptive coming-of-age tale into a pure joy to hear.Who was your favorite character and why?
I would have to say Julia, just because she was messy and unpredictable. Beyond that, I liked Becca. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I found Julia's choice of a Christmas gift for her grandmother was moving and special, and the ending was bittersweet, leaving many open-ended questions. Thankfully Baart wrote two more books with some of these characters, and I look forward to seeing where Julia's fictional life takes her.Any additional comments?
Terrific debut. baart creates Christian fiction that doesn't like the easy answers. I think this is what I like about her writing, because life - and faith journeys - are not that simple.Great work!
A promising debut
