About this listen

Taking chances is part of life, but when you bet your future against the odds, it's a high risk game. Kate Madison's stylish resale shop has been a big Soho success, supporting her and her four kids since her husband's untimely death. Now they are grown and ready to forge lives of their own. And they all choose to play against the odds, to their mother's dismay.

Isabelle, a dedicated attorney, is in line to make partner at her Wall Street firm, when she falls for a client she represents in a criminal case. She tells herself she can make a life with him - but can she?

Julie, a young designer, meets a man who seems too good to be true and falls under his spell. She marries him quickly, gives up her job, moves to LA to be at his side - but is all what it seems?

Justin is a struggling writer who pushes for children with his partner before they're financially or emotionally ready. Will the strain on the relationship take too high a toll?

And Willie, the youngest, a high tech expert, makes a choice that shocks them all, with a woman 15 years older.

Kate - loving, supportive and outspoken - can't keep her children from playing against the odds. Can the odds be beaten? Not often - as her children have to learn for themselves. For Kate, the hardest lesson will be that she can't protect the children she loves from the choices they make - but can only love them as they make them.

Unexpected turns in storyline

Good story but use of names from previous book Malagra is so stand out to use it again, is odd regardless of the meaning… “Miracle“.
But back to the book it’s self was a nice story of a a hard working widow who made a great life for her children and how they all were so different in personalities and their decisions.

Story good, narration too fast

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I liked the book, but would have liked it much better with slower narration. I was listening at 1x speed. When I changed it to .75x speed, it was sluggish. But the narrator was reading so fast, it found it difficult at times to absorb the store, like I did in other Danielle Steel books.

How could the performance have been better?

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Probably not. I love DS books. I've ready or listened to every single one. But her books are what I call "fluffy" and never have deep story lines.

Easy read

The characters could have been developed so much more. Felt like the last few chapters were rushed to things up without including details that would have made the story much more interesting.

Great read

Made me a little sad, but overall an awesome book. There seems to be a recurring theme in Danielle Steele’s novels.

Steel never disappoints

It was a great story of family and values that sometimes are never discussed. Toward the end I kind of had it figured out. Overall a great read
