About this listen

Legends aren't born. They're made.

Dug Sealskinner is a down-on-his-luck mercenary traveling south to join up with King Zadar's army. But he keeps rescuing the wrong people.

First Spring, a child he finds scavenging on the battlefield, and then Lowa, one of Zadar's most fearsome warriors, who has vowed revenge on the king for her sister's execution.

Now Dug's on the wrong side of the thousands-strong army he hoped to join - and worse, Zadar has bloodthirsty druid magic on his side. All Dug has is his war hammer, one small child, and one unpredictable, highly-trained warrior with a lust for revenge that might get them all killed....

It has characters with personality, read by a good narrator. It has well written dialogue that made me laugh out loud, feel like crying, and feel like throwing the book in anger. It has plenty of bloody violence (but not too much). It has vivid, believable landscapes, described well enough that I felt like I was there with the characters (but not so much description that I had to skip). It has just enough magic that no-one is sure there really is any magic.

This is the British Isles during the iron age, prior and during the Roman invasion. It is believable historical fiction with just a hint of magic.

This is a sort of "historically-inspired fantasy," if you will, and it really worked. The characters are realistic (they aren't "too perfect;" they can't just do everything) in a way that many fantasy writers fail to get right. The tale doesn't just follow every trope all the way down the road and beat it to death.

Something that really made this a stand-out for me was the main character, Dug. He's positively loveable. He's not perfect. He's so "human." I really felt for him in this story.

The narrator was great. I thought his selection of voices was spot-on.

There is a great deal of humor in this book, too. A lot of it is through the casual use of naughty words, so if that kind of stuff bothers you, this isn't your horse.

I loved it and I'll be picking up the next one soon.

A good rollicker with enjoyable characters.

A wonderfully written and at times riotously funny account of an aging and amicable warrior and an unlikely band of companions overcoming seemingly insurmountable odds. Each chapter is told from a different character's perspective so it starts off a bit slow as some character's may interest you less at first, but stick it out and you will pick up book two as soon as you finish this gem.

Would you listen to Age of Iron again? Why?

Why would I listen to a book I just listened to?

Who was your favorite character and why?

This is a good yarn. A fun story. Accurately mirrors the endless english desire to be continentals.

What about Sean Barrett’s performance did you like?

Solid sense of the material. Excellent comic timing.

Any additional comments?

Yeah. This was good fun and will pick up the next volume first thing.

Good yarn.

I enjoyed the story. The narration was good and I really found the characters quirky and likable.

Fun story that engages the imagination

A veneer of grim dark, but this is ultimately good guys vs moustache twirling badguys. There is one morally dubious heroine but she randomly decides to be good and her past is rarely brought up and never dealt with.

Despite its historical setting, it never feels more real than Middle Earth or the Circle of the World.

Still, it's a fun time, and it features an arena fight vs a chimp.

A poor man's Joe Abercrombie is still pretty good.

Fantasic fantastic fantastic!!! Everything about this book was awesome and the narrator was a 12 out of 10. I found myself laughing out loud on several occasions and grinning from ear to ear because of the humor throughout the entire book. And it's gritty too with some pretty graphic scenes. I love this author's writing style. The book is on par with Joe Abercrombie's First Law Series. Can't wait to listen to book 2.

Masterpiece...

A- story and narration. Realistic and fantastic at the same time…as close to Joe Abercrombie as I have found.

Engaging and humorous
