Publisher's summary

You die when you die....

You can't change your fate - so throw yourself into battle, because you'll either win or wake up drinking mead in the halls of your ancestors. That's what Finn's tribe believe.

But when their settlement is massacred by a hostile tribe and Finn and several friends, companions, and rivals make their escape across a brutal, unfamiliar landscape, Finn will fight harder than he's ever fought in his life. He wants to live - even if he lives only long enough to tell Thyri Treelegs how he feels about her.

The David Gemmell Award-nominated author of Age of Iron returns with You Die When You Die, in which a mismatched group of refugees battle animals and monsters, determined assassins, powerful tribes, an unforgiving land, and each other as they cross a continent to fulfill a prophecy.

Highly original, great story and humour

Great historical fantasy with Abercrombie-like humour. Characters have an apocryphal, modern voice that just seems to work. Nods to Norse sagas and pre-Columbian archeology throughout. A main character whose the least cool viking around, and a troupe of superpowered warrior women on their tails. Sean Barrett brings everyone to life wonderfully and has superb timing for the jokes. I've listened to this several times over the years, and it gets better with each listen.

Great book!

By the look of the cover, one would think this is some sorta guy-book, Viking with ax and shield. This is a bit misleading, yes there is violence in this book but it is well written. You come to care about the characters and its funny! The narrator does a great job with the different voices and keeping everything interesting. I love Fin's internal mental dialog - so funny.

It’s great for what it is

I really ably Watson’s novels. The fact that it is speculative historical fiction makes it interesting to me, I find myself guessing at what elements from reality and the past are mixed in. While the story is often quite predictable at times (the good guys are about to die then get saved over and over) it’s still a fun listen, especially if you are not in the mood for something super in depth but more fun and fast paced.

Enjoyable

Watson's books are hard to classify. While they are fantasy there is also historical fiction in there, definitely not young adult fantasy. It might lean towards grimdark without being too grim or too dark. This and his other books are amusing, like if Mark Twain tried to write grimdark fantasy.

wow!

if you are on the fence about this one. IT IS WORTH MORE THAN 1 CREDIT! ORDER IT!....This first book in the west of west series is so so freaking good. I always am looking to escape into a different world or time, but struggle finding a fantasy with humor that isn't cheesy. There are not a lot of those kinds of books and that is what I'm always on the hunt for. This book almost made me spit my drink out and laugh out loud several times in public. I am ordering the 2nd book right now.

At first confused, then thoroughly enjoyed it ...

In the beginning, I struggled to keep track of who was who because of the odd, long names. The names sound cool like Finnbogi the Boggy, Sassa Lipchewer, Paloma Pronghorns, and Chogolisa Earthquake. Imagine that times 30! Once the character list dwindled to the main group and their pursuers, I was able to enjoy the story. The adventure doesn't come close to LoR but it's fun, entertaining, and has humor. Definitely made my commute less boring. I love Sean Barrett and his accent so the performance was spot on to me.
