Publisher's summary
Using as his principle source material the Anabasis of Alexander by Arrian, Lamb has cobbled together not only a straightforward retelling of the exciting adventures of the Macedonian, but he has also deftly reconstructed those hidden events of which history is silent. The result is a remarkable portrait of a young man thrust into the leadership of a semi-barbarous Greek people. This is the story of that whirlwind of physical and mental energy which was to explode across the surface of the known world. In the end, it was the civilization of the East which captured Alexander. His untimely death a mere dozen years after his accession to power robbed mankind of one of the most compelling visionaries who ever lived.

Story
Charlemagne was easily one of the most fascinating figures of Western civilization, as well as the most heroic and romantic. The 47 years of his reign marked some of the most significant and far reaching events of the Middle Ages. Undoubtedly, it was his enlightened vision for Europe that resulted in the Carolingian Renaissance, a period of cultural flowering that never really ceased to develop, and which led in a straight line directly to that period of astonishing achievement we now call the High Gothic. Even in the 21st century, we still hear the echoes of his deeds in the historical events that unfold today.

The March of Muscovy begins with a strange, exotic narrative of an isolated, primitive Slavic people living alongside an insignificant river on the edge of the great Eurasian forest belt. Lamb has skillfully called forth the voices of contemporary visitors, merchants, Cossack explorers, diplomats from far away European courts, exiled priests, and the words from among the most acute Russian observers themselves. Lamb has a way of breathing life into the past, of combining the best of scholarly research with an artistic vitality and narrative velocity.

Story
A history of the Crusades. Out of the chaos of Muslim tribal warfare and regional animosity arose a military genius such as Islam had never known: Saladin. Uniting the sultanates of Cairo and Damascus, Saladin created a single powerful state. Luring the crusaders into an ill-considered confrontation, he destroyed their army at the Battle of Hattin in 1187, leaving the few remaining crusaders clinging perilously to a series of towns and forts along the Levantine coast. Into this desperate situation stepped the most formidable warrior of the age, Richard the Lion-Hearted.

Story
Historians universally agree that Thucydides was the greatest historian who has ever lived, and that his story of the Peloponnesian conflict is a marvel of forensic science and fine literature. That such a triumph of intellectual accomplishment was created at the end of the fifth century B.C. in Greece is, perhaps, not so surprising, given the number of original geniuses we find in that period. But that such an historical work would also be simultaneously acknowledged as a work of great literature and a penetrating ethical evaluation of humanity is one of the miracles of ancient history.

Translated by W. E. D. Rouse, The March of the Ten Thousand is one of the most admired and widely read pieces of ancient literature to come down to us. Xenophon employs a very simple, straightforward style to describe what is probably the most exciting military adventure ever undertaken. It is an epic of courage, faith and democratic principle.

Tutored as a boy by Aristotle, Alexander had an inquisitive mind that would serve him well when he faced formidable obstacles during his military campaigns. Shortly after taking command of the army, he launched an invasion of the Persian Empire, and continued his conquests as far south as the deserts of Egypt and as far east as the mountains of present-day Pakistan and the plains of India.

Story
The Hellenica is Xenophon’s continuation of Thucydides’ history of the Peloponnesian War, literally resuming from where the previous author’s history was abruptly left unfinished and narrating the events of the final seven years of the conflict and the war’s aftermath. Some historians consider the Hellenica to be a personal work, written by Xenophon in retirement on his Spartan estate, and intended primarily for circulation among his friends, who would have known the main protagonists and events, having most likely participated in them.

Unquestionably, Herodotus has left mankind one of the world's greatest works of literature. The Persian Wars is part history, part geography, part anthropology...and completely entertaining. It possesses a charm that is legendary. But, over and above this, Herodotus has succeeded for all time in brilliantly expressing the conflict between the ideal of the free man defending his liberty within a state based on the rule of law, and that of the despot who bases his rule on brute force and whose subjects are considered slaves.

From 1337 to 1453 England repeatedly invaded France on the pretext that her kings had a right to the French throne. Though it was a small, poor country, England for most of those "100 years" won the battles, sacked the towns and castles, and dominated the war. Desmond Seward's critically acclaimed account of the Hundred Years War brings to life all of the intrigue, beauty, and royal to-the-death-fighting of that legendary century-long conflict.

The Trojan War is the most famous conflict in history, the subject of Homer's Iliad, one of the cornerstones of Western literature. Although many listeners know that this literary masterwork is based on actual events, there is disagreement about how much of Homer's tale is true. Drawing on recent archaeological research, historian and classicist Barry Strauss explains what really happened in Troy more than 3,000 years ago. For many years it was thought that Troy was an insignificant place that never had a chance against the Greek warriors who laid siege and overwhelmed the city.

Story
The Ottoman Empire has long exerted a strong pull on Western minds and hearts. For over 600 years the empire swelled and declined, rising from a dusty fiefdom in the foothills of Anatolia to a power which ruled over the Danube and the Euphrates with the richest court in Europe. But its decline was prodigious, protracted and total.

Story
In the fifth century BC, a global superpower was determined to bring truth and order to what it regarded as two terrorist states. The superpower was Persia, incomparably rich in ambition, gold, and men. The terrorist states were Athens and Sparta, eccentric cities in a poor and mountainous backwater: Greece. The story of how their citizens took on the Great King of Persia, and thereby saved not only themselves, but Western civilization as well, is as heart-stopping and fateful as any episode in history.

In the summer of 1846, the Army of the West marched through Santa Fe, en route to invade and occupy the Western territories claimed by Mexico. Fueled by the new ideology of “Manifest Destiny,” this land grab would lead to a decades-long battle between the United States and the Navajos, the fiercely resistant rulers of a huge swath of mountainous desert wilderness.

Story
Translated by W. E. D. Rouse, The March of the Ten Thousand is one of the most admired and widely read pieces of ancient literature to come down to us. Xenophon employs a very simple, straightforward style to describe what is probably the most exciting military adventure ever undertaken. It is an epic of courage, faith and democratic principle.

This is audiobook number one in the Casca Series. When they flew Casey into the hospital at Nha Trang, the medics were sure he would die. That he didn't was only the first surprise. The second, and bigger one, was that Casey had been fighting for two thousand years, ever since that day on Golgotha when he thrust his lance into the side of the man on the cross.

Story
Although T. E. Lawrence, commonly known as "Lawrence of Arabia’, died in 1935, the story of his life has captured the imagination of succeeding generations. Seven Pillars of Wisdom is a monumental work in which he chronicles his role in leading the Arab Revolt against the Turks during the First World War. A reluctant leader, and wracked by guilt at the duplicity of the British, Lawrence nevertheless threw himself into his role, suffering the blistering desert conditions and masterminding military campaigns which culminated in the triumphant march of the Arabs into Damascus.

Read Arrian first
I listened to both Alexander of Macedon by H.Lamb and Alexander by Arrian. Each provides insight and detail that complement the other, however I enjoyed the account by Arrian much more. Regardless, I highly recommend both and I guarantee that listening to both books will only increase your fascination with Alexander the Great. Each work is narrated to perfection by Charlton Griffin.

Another Winner by Harold Lamb
This is the second book I have read that was written by Harold Lamb and, as was Hannibal, this book was equally engaging and provided you with a good understanding of who Alexander was. The reality is that there is not a lot of information about these ancient historical figures; and Mr. Lamb's ability to cobble together a strong narrative is worthy of note.

Alexander a purpose from history
Alexander of Macedon by Harold Lamb, is a brillant essay on the life and times of a colossus figure from history Alexander the Great.
From beginning to the end is a terrific listen and it holds you by the throat at times as you find yourself sitting at council with Alexander and his men, next you are in the heat of battle, and than you hear the faint talk of men in the camp as your eyes slowly close by the crackling fire.
Please download this book it is a great collection for your audio library. I have it in mine :)

The greatest book about the greatest man
This has become by far my favorite book ever. It tells the fascinating story of the life of Alexander the Great in a way never done before. It is a historically accurate book that has a narrative tone that makes it read like a story rather than a history. I recommend this book for anyone who has even a fleeting interest in the man and I believe that it will turn that fleeting interest into a downright passion.

Harold Lamb does it again
I have read several accounts of "Alexander the Great" this is one interpretation, that has much research, as all Harold Lamb's books, this one is wonderfully narrated by Charlton Griffin. I do suggest that you should read "Alexander the Great" by Arrian, also narrated by Charlton Griffin. This book does make reference, to Arrian's account several times. I also recommend, "The Virtues of War" by Steven Presfield narrated by John Lee. These three books are a must for anyone who has a fascination, with the legend of Alexander. Your points will not be wasted on any of these.

You are There
Harold Lamb writes history like a novel. It is never boring. You learn not just events and dates but why and how. I now have insight to Alexander's motivations and circumstances.

What an Amazing Man!
What was one of the most memorable moments of Alexander of Macedon?
When he first exerts his will in asking for his horse, Bucephalus.
Have you listened to any of Charlton Griffin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, Louis XIV at Versailles. Both were excellent. His voice can be a little overpowering at times but is very easy to listen to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No
Any additional comments?
Excellent history of Alexander. The author tries to be fair and informative about what is history and what is myth and tells the story of this incredible man in a very entertaining and engaging manner.
I really can't recommend it highly enough.
