Although Hannibal saw defeat in battle, he destroyed army after army sent against him by Rome. These armies were formidable, well drilled, and arguably the best fighters of the era. Hannibal by contrast cobbled together armies consisting of undersupplied Carthaginians, mercenaries, and fickle locals. Through the use of artifice, cunning, and superior tactics, Hannibal won every battle fought in what is now Italy.

Definitely was not a waste of time. This is probably the 8th book I've listened to by Griffin narration. Don' t know what the others complain about....give it some time, get into the story, and....wow, what a great ride!
What about Carthage? Here's the story

Any additional comments?
This is a great historical biography. It is kind of amazing that so much detail is available about the career of this man so many years later. Sadly, there are gaps, and we can never know what he thought about his chosen course. Within the limits of the available source material, Lamb constructs an absolutely compelling story of Hannibal and his army and their protracted conflict with Rome.Best general of all time

Dryer readings will give you a more detailed account of the various twists and turns but nothing like the epic narration presented here
the story that would usher in modern world
