About this listen

This is the breathtaking adventure of the great Carthaginian general who shook the foundations of Rome. When conflict between Rome and Carthage resumed in 219 B.C., after a brief hiatus from the first Punic War, the Romans decided to invade Spain. Eluding several Roman legions sent out to intercept him in Spain and France, Hannibal Barca astoundingly led his small army of mercenaries over the Alps and thundered down into the Po Valley. The Carthaginian swept all resistance from his path and, as one victory led to another, drove a wedge between Rome and its allies. Hannibal marched up and down the Italian peninsula for 18 years, appearing well nigh invincible to a Rome which began to doubt itself for the first time in its history.

This violent and exciting narrative will thrill you with the accounts of heroism and brilliance displayed on both sides as the war raged mercilessly across the entire Western Mediterranean. Learn how the patience of Fabius Maximus and the genius of Lucius Cornelius Scipio finally turned the tide in this, the world's first "global" conflict...a conflict whose aftermath proved to be one of the most decisive and enduring events in world history. And finally, learn the secret to the success of Hannibal, the most brilliant military commander of all time.

This was a superb historical account of Hannibal and the second Punic War. It was my first book about Hannibal, so I don't know how it differs from others, but was an exciting read. It didn't include much personal information about Hannibal because it simply is not available, according to the author.

Superb historical account

One of the best breakdowns of the life of Hannibal and the second Punic war. The reader is well engaged and the writing is something to visualize.

Damn good reading for a legendary story

Harold Lamb has made a cottage industry of writing about great generals, some others of which are available on Audible.com.

Although Hannibal saw defeat in battle, he destroyed army after army sent against him by Rome. These armies were formidable, well drilled, and arguably the best fighters of the era. Hannibal by contrast cobbled together armies consisting of undersupplied Carthaginians, mercenaries, and fickle locals. Through the use of artifice, cunning, and superior tactics, Hannibal won every battle fought in what is now Italy.

Highly recommended, worth every penny spent. The narration is flawless, the story line is marvelous. Worth a listen any day.

Great story and quick introduction to Hannibal and Carthage. I was more inclined to listen to it to understand Carthage more so than learn of Hannibal, but the experience was great and the book gives a good overview of the decline and fall of Carthage and Hannibal's efforts to subvert Rome.

Definitely was not a waste of time. This is probably the 8th book I've listened to by Griffin narration. Don' t know what the others complain about....give it some time, get into the story, and....wow, what a great ride!

What about Carthage? Here's the story

This is a really engaging book. Although it could do without the sound effects at the chapter openings.

Great read

Any additional comments?

This is a great historical biography. It is kind of amazing that so much detail is available about the career of this man so many years later. Sadly, there are gaps, and we can never know what he thought about his chosen course. Within the limits of the available source material, Lamb constructs an absolutely compelling story of Hannibal and his army and their protracted conflict with Rome.

Best general of all time

It's all here in this epic tale of revenge —maybe the greatest tale in this regard ever told.

Dryer readings will give you a more detailed account of the various twists and turns but nothing like the epic narration presented here

the story that would usher in modern world
