Publisher's summary

At empire's end war is not all hell. Mocker finds old friends in the halls of death, and Nepanthe, new lovers in the fields of blood and bone. The war-child wields the sword of truth: the Star Rider's dread secret is at last revealed. And so it ends. Though "end" is but a wizard-word for new beginnings.

Cheery. Lives up to title.

Rich characters, perspectives of anti-heroes and of villains rendered oddly sympathetically, and a plot spanning millennia bring this grim, witty, tragic, honest saga to its end. Huge battles receive less personal detail and personal struggles and costs get more than in any series I can think of with a set of premises like this one.

Another amazing book by Cook

While I understand it is some of the earlier works of Cook in relation to the Black Company which I discover first, I love this series. It teases the world in a way that allows the reader to ponder and gives enough to have a good understanding of the world and the consequences of events.
