About this listen

Elena Alvarez is living a cursed life. From the deadly fire she accidentally set as a child to her mother's abandonment and now an unwanted pregnancy, she knows better than most that small actions can have terrible consequences. Yet when her grandmother calls and asks her to watch over the children of a recent widower in a small, isolated town in Colorado, she takes it as a chance to finally organize her life.

Instead, she is confronted by reflections of her own troubles wherever she turns - the recent widower and his two children adrift in a changed world, her own mysterious family history, and the interwoven lives within the town itself. Bit by bit, she begins to question her understanding of cause and effect, reexamining the tragedies she's held on to and the wounds she's refused to let heal.

But when the children go missing, Elena's fragile new peace is shattered. It's only at the prospect of fresh loss and blame that she discovers the truth of the terrible burdens we take upon ourselves, the way tragedy and redemption are inevitably intertwined - and how curses can sometimes lead to blessings, however disguised.

Great book

Loved the little life lessons woven thru at just the right moments just like a wise grandma would know and share.

Loved this story.

Elena and the other characters are human and engaging, with all their sorrows and happiness. Descriptions of Leadville and the surrounding mountains are spot on. I enjoyed spending time with all of this. Narrator is excellent.

A COMPELLING READ!

Margo weaves a beautiful tapestry that allows the reader to develop a oneness with her characters. Her descriptions left me feeling that I was actually there as the events unfolded. A story not to be missed.

What a wonderful journey.

I wish everyone could have the privilege of reading this book and having the words paint such a touching story in their imaginations. I was totally enthralled. Please Ms Catts, write more soon! I loved this story.

Boring!!!!!

Ugh......cannot get into this. It's an unending boring slog. I'd rather be eating brussel sprouts and I hate them.

Without a doubt...

this is the most boring book I've listened to this year. It just drones on with the first-person narrator wallowing in all her bad life choices. I give up, I just can't care about her or anyone else in this story.
