About this listen

Martin Luther King Jr., was a powerful and eloquent champion of the poor and oppressed in the US, and at the height of his fame in the mid-'60s seemed to offer the real possibility of a new and radical beginning for liberal politics in the USA. However, in 1968, he was assassinated; the movement for social and economic change has never recovered.

The conviction of James Earl Ray for his murder has never looked even remotely safe, and when William Pepper began to investigate the case it was the start of a 25-year campaign for justice. At a civil trial in 1999, supported by the King family, 70 witnesses under oath set out the details of the conspiracy Pepper had unearthed: the jury took just one hour to find that Ray was not responsible for the assassination, that a wide-ranging conspiracy existed, and that government agents were involved.

An Act of State lays out the extraordinary facts of the King story - of the huge groundswell of optimism engendered by his charismatic radicalism, of how plans for his execution were laid at the very heart of government and the military, and of the disinformation and media cover-ups that followed every attempt to search out the truth. As shocking as it is tragic, An Act of State remains the most compelling and authoritative account of how King's challenge to the US establishment led inexorably to his murder.

I am yet convinced of a conspiracy to kill President Kennedy and Dr. Martin Luther King

This is the third book I have read about the assassination of MLK. The more I read fills in the gaps and makes me very suspicious of government. I would recommend this to anyone with any doubts about how sinister and disappointing our government is.

Credible refuting of official spin on MLK murder

Author does a thorough job of correcting lies told us about MLK murder. As one seeking the truth about Dr. King's tragic death in 1968, the evidence led him to ultimately defend the man falsely accused of shooting him. Evidence that should have been embraced by the national media and pursued by those responsible for prosecution of crimes was ignored and blocked at every turn. Complicity of the government at multiple levels was proven legally in a court of law, but summarily dismissed and barely reported in the mainstream media, which has not functioned independently from government dictates for over half a century.

My only criticisms of this were the author's equally long philosophical tirades and political bloviating, which seemed mostly one-sided, placing maximum blame at the party level, when his own evidence supported powers operating above the somewhat academic details of which was in office. He proved his case, and clearly conveyed the many tragedies resulting from the whole operation, from the injustices done to the alleged lone gunman, to the continued mistreatment of the King family, to the profound loss to America of one if our greatest men, who not only spoke truth and justice for all, but walked among them at great personal cost to prove that stand and to lead others towards the truth and needed change.

Great - skip epilogue

The story line regarding MLK assassination is complex. This book does an excellent job, and was my first time learning this story. It repeats the story from different angles and witnesses. The author develops the storyline in a coherent fashion.

I would avoid the epilogue. It’s is a bash on US government relating to the time this book was published- the 2000s. To me it was not relevant to the assassination.

Act of State……political comments in the last chapter annoys me

I expected a historic perspective regarding MLK and the book did a good job of that. The last chapter was a political assassination of the USA. The more I read the more annoyed I got. I don’t recall reading one positive comment regarding the USA. Granted, the USA has its faults, but but so does every other government in the world. And some are much worse.
