About this listen

A country-house murder-mystery classic, as a party of people find themselves snowed in on Christmas Eve with a murderer among them....

The snow is thick, the phone line is down, and no one is getting in or out of Warbeck Hall. All is set for a lovely Christmas, with friends and family gathered round the fire, except as the bells chime midnight, a murder is committed.

But who is responsible? The scorned young lover? The lord's passed-over cousin? The social-climbing politician's wife? The Czech history professor? The obsequious butler?

And perhaps the real question is: Can they survive long enough to find out?

Good plot, nice pace, narrator did a very good job. Five more words to meet requirements.

Great narration

Took me a while to get into this story. Had to listen to the first couple of chapters twice. I just seem to have a hard time understanding and following. By the time I got to Chapter 7 I finally started to enjoy the book.

Not A Very Merry Christmas

I loved this book! It's a different take on a cozy novel. What's different is that you don't know who the amateur detective is until the end! The reader was superb and the tale intriguing. It wasn't just another same old, same old, cozy, and the characters not the same ones I'd grown used to. Did I say, I loved this book?

A Different Cozy

Glad to have discovered this author. Have to rely on older works to avoid today's ubiquitous profanity and graphic content.

Good English Country House Mystery

I finally after four tries finished this story. It was a good story but seemed to go very slowly. I had figured out who-dun-it near the end but didn’t understand why.

same man / narrator voicing all characters. should have been a different voice for all characters.

Formulaic but entertaining and kept me guessing. Family gathering in country home for the lord's last Christmas

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. An engaging story and just the thing for a long plane ride. Recommended!

An excellent cozy mystery

Full disclosure: while I did enjoy the story, it took several times to get through. Primarily because it was so smooth, it put me to sleep no fewer than a dozen times in the first couple chapters. That isn't a slight, I'd consider it an asset. Short as it is (as another reviewer mentioned, the narration is very deliberate, so 1.5x is a rather comfortable speed, making the run time a little over 4 hours) it never really taxes the listener. There are some familiar elements, but also some unique perspectives, together which made for an enjoyable listen.

Cozy is a good word

The only reason I have it 4 stars instead of 5 was the style of the narrator. While it was deliberate in order to fulfil the stereotype of the stuffy lord/manor culture, I found the narration of reading the emotions of the characters instead of acting those emotions out to be wanting. I don't want it read to me that someone reacted in disgust, I want to hear it in the narrator's voice. Other than that, you should enjoy this cozy read.

Interesting story, enjoyed it immensly
