Listen to the exciting things that happened during the Middle Kingdom of ancient Egypt. Did you know that in this period, Osiris became the main god of the popular religion? His cult was respected by the pharaohs of the Eleventh Dynasty, but it quickly spread throughout Egypt, and ordinary people became his followers. The Middle Kingdom is a short period in Egypt’s history, but it is important because it was a period of political unity and prosperity. Because of that, it is sometimes referred to as the Golden Age of Egypt.

Story
The Egyptian pyramids are some of the greatest building feats ever achieved. At a time when the rest of the world was in the Bronze Age, living in small villages sustained by subsistence farming, the Egyptians built the pyramids. It is mind-boggling to think they did this when mankind had not yet invented iron or the wheel. They did this when the only tools workmen had were made from either bronze, which had to be constantly re-sharpened, or stone or wood. It’s truly remarkable.

Story
Did you know that it was during the New Kingdom period that ancient Egyptian kings started calling themselves “pharaohs"? Previously, they were simply referred to as kings. But the fact that we call all of them pharaohs today speaks about how important and influential the New Kingdom was. It is also the most researched period of ancient Egyptian history because it has an abundance of surviving evidence. This is also the time when some of the best-known pharaohs ruled, such as Ahmose, Hatshepsut, Thutmose, Nefertiti, and Ramses II.

Story
The narrative of the Korean War in the West, and particularly in the United States, tells the tale of a conflict between two global superpowers and competing ideologies in a far-flung corner of the globe. The reality is that the wheels of motion that drove the country to war in 1950 began turning long before American boots set foot on Korean soil. The heart of the conflict was a civil war between a population arbitrarily divided by colonization and the global geopolitics at the end of the Second World War.

Whether we realize it or not, stories and characters from Timbuktu are everywhere in our modern-day lives. The great Mansa Musa was the most iconic king of the Mali Empire. Considered to be one of the richest men ever, Mansa Musa is not only the right answer to a commonly asked trivia question but also one of the inspirations behind Marvel’s Black Panther. Although the other kings who reigned over Timbuktu may not be known quite as well as Mansa Musa, their lives have also inspired stories we are quite familiar with today.

Story
Acclaimed classics scholar Edith Hall's Introducing the Ancient Greeks is the first book to offer a synthesis of the entire ancient Greek experience, from the rise of the Mycenaean kingdoms of the sixteenth century BC to the final victory of Christianity over paganism in AD 391. Each of the ten chapters visits a different Greek community at a different moment during the twenty centuries of ancient Greek history.

Story
This riveting narrative explores the lives of six remarkable female pharaohs, from Hatshepsut to Cleopatra - women who ruled with real power - and shines a piercing light on our own perceptions of women in power today. Female rulers are a rare phenomenon - but thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, women reigned supreme. But throughout human history, women in positions of power were more often used as political pawns in a male-dominated society. Story
The Achaemenid Persian kings ruled over the largest empire of antiquity, stretching from Libya to the steppes of Asia and from Ethiopia to Pakistan. In Persians, historian Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones tells the epic story of this dynasty and the world it ruled. Drawing on Iranian inscriptions, cuneiform tablets, art, and archaeology, he shows how the Achaemenid Persian Empire was the world’s first superpower—one built, despite its imperial ambition, on cooperation and tolerance. This is the definitive history of the Achaemenid dynasty and its legacies in modern-day Iran.

Whether it is Plato's lost city of Atlantis, a technological advanced utopia that sank into the ocean "in a single day and night of misfortune"; the colony of Roanoke, whose early American settlers were swallowed up in the wild forest lands of the unexplored continent, or the Ancient American Explorers, who managed to arrive to the New World 2,000 years before Columbus, the disappearance of these societies is as cryptic as it is implausible. This book will look at cultures of the 10 greatest lost civilizations in history.

Though I'm captivated I got this book
Any additional comments?
The author writes well and decreases the history of Egyptian archeology in a clear and logical manner. This may be related to the overall field of Egyptian studies it is of less interest to a layman such as myself. Though I'm captivated I got this book and I am enjoying it very much.

A superb book
Full of well researched information throughout. Easy to digest, relatively short chapters but chocked full of detailed information. The only shortcoming, but a minor once, is that it's a bit difficult to identify where the objects pictured may be found. Highly recommended.
