About this listen

Historic Prince Edward Island in the Gulf of Saint Lawrence is the scene of this charming romance, which has captivated generations of readers young and old. Anne, the orphan child who brings happiness and love into the lives of her foster parents, is one of the most beloved heroines in all literature. But life was not kind to her at the start of her great adventure. For when Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, living alone, decided to adopt a child from the local orphanage, they asked for a boy. Their dismay and disappointment were great when a lonely, pathetic little girl was sent by mistake. At first Marilla was determined that Anne must be returned at once to the orphanage, but kindly, warm-hearted Matthew urged that she be given a chance to prove herself. The challenge laid down for this 11-year-old girl - and the mishaps that befall her before she can win the heart of her foster mother - make up the theme of this stirring tale.Hear more stories in the Anne of Green Gables series.(P)1998 by Blackstone Audiobooks Classics Literature & Fiction Fostering Heartfelt Funny Witty Feel-Good Romance History For Kids Family Classics

This was my third time visiting Anne in Avonlea, and it was just as delightful as the first! This story and these characters never fail to make me laugh and cry. They have endeared themselves to my heart and feel more like friends than fiction.

Just as Good the Third Time Around

A heartwarming, engaging story that I enjoyed ever so much. The narration was expertly performed for the characters and their personalities, especially considering this story was originally published in 1908.

Simply wonderul story and narration

I have read this book several times and it still brings me to tears and makes me feel like I’m right there with them. This it the first time I’ve listened to the audible version and it’s is really good. I enjoyed the persons voice reading it. I was pulled into the story yet again and listened to it every free minute I had. Listening to it also helped me get some work done around the house.

Love this book!

Would you consider the audio edition of Anne of Green Gables to be better than the print version?

I definitely like the audio book better than the print version.

What other book might you compare Anne of Green Gables to and why?

Anne of Green Gables is one of those books which cannot be compared to anything else because it sets the bar so high.

Which character – as performed by Susan O'Malley – was your favorite?

Matthew Cuthbert. He did not say much, but then when he did speak it was always powerful.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I definitely wanted to listen to the whole thing at one sitting.

A Desrved Classic

I've seen the movies with friends, but decided I'd take a break from more serious book topics to go through this one myself. I like the narrator and the subject matter is light, which makes for a pleasant break. The chapters are short, which also makes it nice for dishes or cleaning duties.

Pleasant light reading

There”s a reason why this book is considered a classic! I enjoyed it as much as an adult as I did as a child. If you have’s read it yet, you should, if you already have, long ago- it’s worth reading again.

As good as ever!

My family (kids aged 11 and 9) listened to this book on a cross-country trip and enjoyed every minute of it. This is an excellent story, wonderfully written and read.
