About this listen

"I will come by train. I will wear a yellow bonnet. I am plain and tall." A heartwarming story about two children, Anna and Caleb, whose lives are changed forever when their widowed papa advertises for a mail-order bride. Sarah Elisabeth Wheaton from Maine answers the ad and agrees to come for a month. Sarah brings gifts from the sea, a cat named Seal, and singing and laughter to the quiet house. But will she like it enough to stay? Anna and Caleb wait and wonder -- and hope. Great story

As a 3rd grade teacher, teaching about the pioneers, sequencing and history, this was an excellent story for the children.

Dislikes and likes

I loved the story. It had great detail and drew me in. One thing I would change is to make a sequel or to make it longer because I would’ve preferred to have details about the wedding and about their life happily ever after.

A sweet story

I didn’t remember how lovely this story was, and how it manages to simply share the realities of days gone by.

Exquisite

This is an exquisite little treasure box of a story. I had heard of the book and the film, but had never read the story. How lovely.

Lovely

MacLachlan tells this lovely story in short, clean brush strokes complimented by the most excellent narration of Glenn Close. You can visualize each character by their voice.

One of the classics

My brother and I used to listen to this book as children. We had it on a cassette tape, and we rewound it countless times, over and over. The narrator did such a nice job that I’ll never be able to enjoy just reading the book on my own. Her pronunciations, tones, characters, and enthusiasm for the story are unmatched, and the soundtrack is incredibly well-done, adding excitement in all the right places. The story itself is a perfect mix of expectations, apprehensions, adventure, and emotion that leads to a satisfying close. I can’t recommend this book enough! It’s a short, captivating story that children, adults–and children who turn into adults–will love.
