Publisher's summary

Annie Oakley was without a doubt the greatest markswoman who ever lived. Born in 1860 in Darke County, Ohio, she built herself from obscure and impoverished beginnings into the best known woman of her time.

Courtney Ryley Cooper's classic biography traces Oakley's extraordinary journey and separates the facts from the many legends that have sprung up in its wake. We learn of her enduring marriage to Frank Butler and their first meeting, a shooting match in which the seemingly delicate young girl defeated the professional marksman; her association with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show and its triumphal tour through Europe and America; the train crash that nearly took her life; and her years as an actress and teacher. Her story remains to this day one of the grandest to have come out of the Old West.

Editorial reviews

Widely considered to be the greatest markswoman who ever lived and who could shoot off the end of a cigarette dangling from her husband’s lips, the biography Annie Oakley: Woman at Arms is a fascinating account of a remarkable woman who experienced enough adventure in her 66 years to fill up a dozen lives.

Narrated in the wonderfully gravelly tone of an aging cowboy by Jonathan Reese, Annie Oakley: Woman at Arms richly details the unlikely rise of the five-foot-tall woman from nowhere Ohio, who went from poverty and great personal hardship, to become the best-known woman in the world as the star and sharpest-shooting member of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West famous travelling show.

This woman was an awesome person!

The story is that of incredible proportions. The performance could be a little better, but that aside, I now have an obsession with Little Sure Shot! She is one of those people I will for the rest of my life try to emulate!!!

Every one should learn from her perseverance!

I am a former police woman who could shoot a smiley face on my target. I took anniokley5 as my email address in honor of her. But mostly because I have her spirit of courage. I'm fighting breast cancer holistically for 2yrs 9mos now.
I'm pretty sure Annie would be helping me address Federal Docket OCR-DHHS 09454 AA-OO Reforming the HIPPA Act. It's not about privacy of our records, it's about quality of care. PLUS:Fighting 'yellow' journalism (now called 'fake' news) about the war on cancer. Intragrative oncology should be part of Medicare health care options. It is not! I have been refused a surgery consult because I refuse to take chemotherapy. Lord give me her courage to make a difference for my grandchildren and the world. Stories of Miss Annie inspire me to persevere. Thank you for sharing this story with the world 😇🤠🙋‍♀️
