The memoir of one of America’s best writers

I am a long time audiobook listener and this is my first review. I believe that I have listened to every book Elmer Kelton wrote and believe that even though he won many awards as a western writer he deserves much higher recognition as a great author. His eloquence in using the western vernacular is amazing. This memoir moved me to tears. The story of his life and his passion for writing is absolutely amazing and inspirational. Well worth the read or listen if you have ever appreciated one of his books.

Great story

Elmer Kelton is my favorite western author. I read every book of his I can get my hands on. His stories are real because he lived the subject.
I always wanted to know more about him and this is his life plus a lot of serious true history about life in most of the Twentieth Century. It also has a lot of humor at times, and a lot about WW1 and WW2 you only hear from veterans.

Wonderful story

I loved Sandhills Boy ! True American history, told just as it was, with humor, and insight that shows how the American dream came true.

Excellent read.

This was very interesting and entertaining, although I think it is a book a reader wouldn't want to start until after having read some of Elmer Kelton's other works.

Shockingly boring

How could such an accomplished author produce a work that plods as much as this one? After 6 hours of listening I threw in the towel as it was just too painful. I'll continue to be a fan of his stories, but this book was a huge mistake.
