About this listen

New York Times best-selling author James Lee Burke brings listeners a captivating tale of justice, love, brutality, and mysticism set in the turbulent 1960s.

The American West in the early 1960s appears to be a pastoral paradise: golden wheat fields, mist-filled canyons, frolicking animals. Aspiring novelist Aaron Holland Broussard has observed it from the open door of a boxcar, riding the rails for both inspiration and odd jobs.

Jumping off in Denver, he finds work on a farm and meets Joanne McDuffy, an articulate and fierce college student and gifted painter. Their soul connection is immediate, but their romance is complicated by Joanne’s involvement with a shady professor who is mixed up with a drug-addled cult. When a sinister businessman and his son who wield their influence through vicious cruelty set their sights on Aaron, drawing him into an investigation of grotesque murders, it is clear that this idyllic landscape harbors tremendous power - and evil. Followed by a mysterious shrouded figure who might not be human, Aaron will have to face down all these foes to save the life of the woman he loves and his own.

The latest installment in James Lee Burke’s masterful Holland family saga, Another Kind of Eden is both riveting and one of Burke’s most ambitious works to date. It dismantles the myths of both the 20th-century American West and the peace-and-love decade, excavating the beauty and idealism of the era to show the menace and chaos that lay simmering just beneath the surface.

Realistic yer surreal, memorable

Outstanding narration helps one get inside the head of this man, puzzled by life but trying to be true to himself. A dark story, yet uplifting.

left me flat.

And another one...

I never grow weary of this author's take on life. He is deep without being preachy and his prose is like a soothing balm in a world of rough characters.

Hackberry Holland stories are amazing

I really enjoyed this book. It’s only 6 hours which makes me wonder if it’s abridged. I love James Lee Burkes style of writing. The way he describes things makes everything come alive. My Dad told me to check out his books. I had listened to a book from another author that Will Patton narrated and that’s what pushed me over the edge to give JLB a listen. This is my 4th or 5th book by Burke and won’t be my last. I have steered slightly away from the Robicheaux books as the movies weren’t that great and the bayou isn’t my favorite scenery. I’m going to start listening to them after this as the writing style is too amazing to not listen to all of James Lee Burke’s books; at least the ones that Will Patton reads as he is the best reader, he truly makes the words come alive as does Burke.

Love Will Patton's Narration

I've read and listened to many books by James Lee Burke - this was my least favorite. I'm always in awe of his language use and the beautiful descriptions he paints with his words. The story, this time, for me, was a bit esoteric and not fulfilling. I thought the narration by Will Patton was spot on as always. However the story seemed like it was trying to be many things at once and it just sort of fell apart. But, as always, I do look forward to his next novel.

as always, lyrical prose

overall pretty gloomy. as in many if his books, Mr Burke shows open hostility to business, and seems to wish that we lived an idyllic life, as they do in Cuba, or under the iron fist of the Ortega brothers
