About this listen

George Surridge, director of the Birmington Zoo, is a man with many worries: his marriage is collapsing; his finances are insecure; and an outbreak of disease threatens the animals in his care. As Surridge's debts mount and the pressure on him increases, he begins to dream of miracle solutions. But is he cunning enough to turn his dreams into reality - and could he commit the most devious murder in pursuit of his goals?

This ingenious crime novel, with its unusual 'inverted' structure and sympathetic portrait of a man on the edge, is one of the greatest works by this highly respected author.

I have enjoyed 4 other recordings of mysteries by Freeman Wills Crofts. Perhaps the amount of detail will not appeal to everyone, but I like following along with the detective as he sorts the clues. This particular mystery is the best of all of the mysteries by the author that I have listened to so far. I will enjoy starting it over, to see ,or hear, what I might have missed....as I wait for the next Crofts mystery.

FWC knew how to write. Some of his passages are memorable for their witty descriptions. But he really played fair with his readers. You can follow his progress but rarely get ahead. A true architect of a mystery. I think this might be his best. Way ahead of anything on offer now. Enjoy.

Possibly the best of the series.
