About this listen

Mystery fans will devour this entry into the classic wisecracking Nero Wolfe series, in which Wolfe must track down a dangerous gunman - or risk losing his right-hand man.

Archie Goodwin is chipper as he strolls home from his weekly poker game, money in his pocket and a smile on his lips. He has just reached Nero Wolfe’s stately brownstone on West 35th Street when a sedan whips around the corner and two gunshots ring out, nearly hitting Goodwin. It is a warning, and the message is clear: The next bullet will not miss.

Rotund investigator Nero Wolfe has made more than his fair share of enemies over the years, and it seems one of them has decided to strike, targeting Wolfe’s indefatigable assistant. Some might run for cover, but Archie Goodwin is not the type. With the help of Wolfe’s brainpower, Goodwin will find the man who wants him dead - unless the killer gets to Goodwin first.

Nero Award-winning author Robert Goldsborough continues the brilliant work of Rex Stout in this classic mystery series. According to Publishers Weekly, “Goldsborough cleverly captures the tone and language of the originals. Rex Stout fans can only hope he has no plans to wind up the series soon”.

I was hornswaggled!!!

It wasn’t until I finished this audio selection before I found out it was not an original Stout! To my credit something in the last third of the book just did not flow for me like so many other original Nero Wolfe classics. I did enjoy, but give it 6 out of 10 against the originals. Diligently, though, I am researching this pastiche author with maybe promise for me.

outstanding narration

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The reading was so well done. the alterations in the voice for each caricature was very good and the reading was at a perfect pace to keep the pace over the story moving along

Escamilo, the 🌟.

Love Archie's performance and the twists of the players. Didn't expect that the turns would evolve the way they did!

Nero Wolf

Always a nice read / listen. Great old Private investigation series that brings me back to how life was back then.

Fritz Brenner

How is it that Fritz now has a german accent, when he was a french speaker from French-speaking Switzerland?
The narration is otherwise very “satisfactory”!

A continuation of Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin

The author catches the spirit of Rex Stouts classic characters and makes this an enjoyable read.

Average Nero Wolf Mystery

Archie becomes the target of an assassin who seeks revenge against Nero Wolf for past perceived wrongs. Archie and Nero also become involved in an interesting black mail plot.

Narration drives me nuts.

The accents were over the top and distracting. What I like in an audio book is something that is fairly close to what my reading of the book would be.

iOkay Story, Horrible Narrator

The narrator makes Fritz sound like Arnold Schwarzenegger. All of the voices are very 1 dimensional, one note. No variety, no depth, no dynamics. Would not listen again to this narrator.
