Publisher's summary

Two outcasts shared a friendship in childhood, but for Asher Swain, his memories were tortured by an accident that claimed his only friend. Years later, he met a woman reading as she sat by a pond in a park. The two strangers began a friendship over a love of literature that developed into love for each other.

But, when Asher realized they shared a past as well as their present, he kept his secret, afraid for Penelope to find out who he really was.

When the truth is revealed, will they be ripped apart, or will their love make them stronger?

The story is loosely based on the fairy tale "The Ugly Duckling".

Heartbreaking and full of hope too

One of my favorites in the series! Beautiful, and touching. A reminder of the the boundlessness of the heart ♥️

Get Out The Tissues!

Wow, get out the tissues for this new installment of the Heroes At Heart Series because you are going to need them several times throughout the book! As usual, Ms Jordan weaves a wonderful story, this time lightly based on The Ugly Duckling. Asher and Penny became friends in kindergarten where they found they were drawn to each other both being outcasts. Unfortunately an accident pulls them apart and they don’t see each other until 20 years later when they meet by chance in a park. During a conversation with Penny, Asher realizes that she is his lost childhood friend. He is unsure of admitting their relationship, afraid of losing the friendship. Unfortunately secrets sometimes come back to bite us when we least expect it! This a sweet story of love, friendship, abuse and forgiveness. It is difficult to listen to in parts because of the abuse and bullying Asher goes through as a child and the difficulties Penny must also endure, however it is well written and necessary to the story. This series has become one of my very favorites and I have listened to these stories several times already, and will continue to do so, I enjoy them that much. Kale Williams always does an exceptional job with the narration bringing the characters and story to life. I highly recommend this, and every book in this series!
