About this listen

When a mysterious ultrasonic weapon attack may be the preamble to something greater, Agent Zero sets off on a global manhunt to stop the ultimate devastation, before it is too late.

Agent Zero, trying to come up for air on the heels of the president’s impeachment and Sarah’s close brush with danger, wants to retire from the service and try to get his family back together. But fate has other choices for him. With the safety of the world at stake, Zero knows he must follow the call to duty.

Yet, his memories are shifting, and with it, new secrets are flooding back. Tormented, at his low point, Agent Zero may be able to save the world, but he may not be able to escape from himself.

Assassin Zero is the seventh book in Agent Zero spy thriller series. It is an unputdownable espionage thriller that will keep you listening late into the night.

Seriously couldn’t stop

This is one my top three so far of the series. Had me constantly wanting to get back to it and find out what happened next. Had me on the edge of my seat stressing about what’s going to happen next to the characters. Definitely worth the listen.

Mars needs to research, books need new narrator

1. Assault rifles
2. His injured hand tracked right in the last shot; it has always tracked left.
3. Lady has a tattoo of the Chinese character for "fire" since it's the surname she adopted. It's not a Chinese surname. (There are surnames that sounds like the word for "fire" but they don't mean the same.)
4. Mia intuits/guesses exactly which drug-dealing spot Sarah will go to.

The several plots going on are okay, and there is some exciting action, although I've seen the helicopter-panel truck scene elsewhere. There's some chronology confusion at the end when we switch from Maria's pov to Zero's. When did Misha smash the controls, when was Zero overcome, when did Maria get away from Misha? The new president may actually be the most interesting character here.

Now for the narration. BC's reading voice is nice--smooth and manly-tough. But when men speak, their voices suddenly go up a few notches. This is okay for Bixby (a stereotype for sure), but not for Zero or most of the others. His voices for the women are good. But his accents are not. Every non-native English speaker speaks with the same accent and very choppily. Russian, Chinese, Cuban, even Maria's Nordic. She really shouldn't have an accent, and certainly shouldn't be so non-fluent as to chop up her sentences.

But this book has moved the story forward. Looks like they are all ready for some adjustments in their lives. The next book should start with a hiatus in everyone's careers.

Better & Better

Jack Mars books on Agent Zero get better and better as you proceed through the series. while you do not have to listen to the beginning of the series to enjoy the books I strongly suggest you start with book one and enjoy the increased character development and writing. The narration is also good and it is a worthwhile investment to purchase the entire series.

Some of the terms and actions seemed inaccurate or contrived

I most disliked the use of KGB long after that agency had changed its name. I’m disappointed since I liked the earlier books on the series

Not my favorite Zero book

I can agree with some of the remarks from other reviews. This story spends too much time on his mental problems to the degree that it becomes the main storyline and the subject of the criminal plot against the country is underdeveloped and weak. While I understand the important part that his troubled mind plays in the character ever since the beginning, it feels unrealistic and almost impossible for him to have fallen so far from the capable agent in earlier books to the almost paralyzed man with incapacitating mental breakdowns.

I think earlier books did a better job of weaving a storyline of intrigue and danger while still portraying the vulnerable humanity of the character. Perhaps this was a necessary chapter in the whole series and certainly necessary for the reader to finish this book if intending to continue the series. I can only hope that going forward the stories focus a little more balance on the character and plot of the villains as well as Agent Zero.

And it was also disappointing to see the weak character that Maria had become. Instead of the strong and decisive agent I picture an old lady in a suit behind a desk who can't even fight off villains anymore. But maybe that was the intention and with the end of the story it plans to point her back in the right direction.

Commercial nuclear power plants

Jack, please do more than 5 minutes research on how a nuclear reactor operates, who operates them and how the facilities are protected.

Did not let down

Picking the series again and the characters was enjoyable. Unfortunately the use of a sonic weapon on USA citizens very believable. Enjoyed the pace, continue character development and they way it was resolved yet setting it up for the next book.
