About this listen

If you're looking for a captivating collection of Australian myths, then pay attention....

With a history reaching back over 40,000 years, Indigenous Australian culture is one of the oldest continually existing cultures in the world. According to DNA tests conducted at the University of Copenhagen, Indigenous Australian people are the descendants of the first migrants to have left the birthplace of humanity in Africa, some 75,000 years ago. Across these many millennia, the Indigenous peoples of Australia have established complex and unique societies that have adapted well to the often harsh conditions of the Australian landscape.

Although Indigenous Australian culture tends to be named as though it were a single unit, it is far from monolithic. According to the Australian government’s website, at the time of first contact with Europeans, there were some 500 distinct Indigenous nations inhabiting Australia, speaking different languages and following their own religious and cultural practices, with a certain amount of overlap across cultures.

As with all human societies, that of the Indigenous Australians is abounding in stories. Stories of how the world came to be the way it is, stories of heroism and perfidy, stories about animals and birds, and stories about love and hate all have parts to play in the wide array of myths, legends, and tales created by Indigenous Australians.

Australian Mythology: Captivating Dreamtime Stories of Indigenous Australians invites you to go on a startling journey and discover:

  • Origin stories
  • Myths of gods, heroes, and monsters
  • Animal tales
  • And much, much more!

Millenia-old Australian aboriginal stories of creation

That it was narrated by an American. What? These stories should be told by the current Australian Aboriginal custodians & keepers of culture - if they deem it appropriate. And, the pronunciation of the Australian names was the worst! It's not hard to learn the correct way to pronounce words in others' languages. It's lazy, at best, not to & it's culturally inappropriate, at worst.

Mystery, Power, Appreciation

To realize that all we think we know is in truth metaphor; to conceive of the lovely, intimate metaphor that we are one of infinitely varied, harmonic vibrations emanating from earth that in turn emanates the Divine; to live this way. What a gift this Audiobook is!

This is a magical Audiobook

I have had my copy for thirteen years now, and, since the first time I listen to it, I have called it my Bible. This Audiobook has helped me to summon up lost teachings of my own soul's journey and has helped me to find my truth.

Recommend

A great resource for those interesting in the culture of the Australian Aborigines, this Audiobook has a very strong focus on religion, shamanism, and spirituality which is so central to indigenous culture. Lawlor pays a lot of attention to the kin relations, totems, ancestors, initiation rites, and the Dreamtime. Anyone with some interest in the indigenous people of Australia should check this Audiobook out.

Tremendously deep in meaning

This Audiobook is so tremendously deep in meaning that I experienced the grief the remnants of indigenous cultures feel for the earth. It is a restoration of meaning and depth in man's roots - take the time to listen to it and reach down within yourself to truly understand how distorted our species has become.

Reaching deep into the past

I have purchased at least three copies of this Audiobook to give as gifts. This latest one is given to an ex-pat from Australia as even the Australians overlook the depth and richness of the Aboriginal heritage. Like we have done with the American Indians in the US, we trampled on the values, the wisdom, and the world view of the indigenous cultures.

The Audiobook itself is great

One is that it goes into great detail about traditional Aboriginal beliefs without paying attention to modern-day continuation and adaptation of Aboriginal beliefs. Another is that Australia is so large and diverse that it's hard to make any generalization about Aboriginal culture. However, these are only minor issues. The Audiobook itself is great.

Information about Australian Arborigines

This Audiobook is well and gives you a good overview of the myths and legend of these Aborigines! And it let you know how much in common these ancient people of Australia have in common with other native people in South and Noth America. I like listening to this Audiobook very much. Very interesting!!

Take the time to listen to this one!

This Audiobook connects many worlds ....and truly allows one to experience Dreamtime ....it connects. not only the many systems and symbols which belong to the aborigine but explains the system and worlds in the more limited world view of the western world...it brings narrowness to openness and on to experience. This Audiobook brings together the research I've been looking for and explains many questions left open by other writers and anthropologists.
