Publisher's summary

For the uninitiated who discover the dark goals of the puppet masters of the world, only one option remains: run!

Gabriel, Othia and Samantha have a single focus: escape Europe and make it back to the United States. A daunting task that seems impossible, considering what hunts them.

Yet even the ultra-powerful cannot stop the change from coming. Employing ancient unholy rituals, they hide in the periphery of humanity, manipulating the masses for their barbaric goals. Their tenuous grasp on control is slipping and veteran police detective Stephen James finds his fate intertwined with Gabriel's as he's shown the true definition of horror.

His family's freedom is his only goal, yet Gabriel discovers that seldom do human desires align with destiny. With the truth becoming clearer every day, he gets a glimpse into what his life is destined to become; and it is terrifying! Harried, wounded and lost...a single false step could seal the fate of not only Gabriel's family, but that of all mankind.

better than book 1

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

As with the first book, this is fast paced and full of gritty action. This book pretty much seems to pick up around where the first book ends and continues the story. I think I liked this one more than the first. The narration is done well. A definite recommendation for horror fans.

Awakening

Oh boy! This book is so good. I listened to this audio book to and from work. I found myself just sitting in the car listening to this book instead of going inside because I kept waiting for a "good" stopping spot. The narrator continues to impress me. I received this audio book for free through Audiobook Boom for my unbiased review.

The BEST yet!!!

Unimaginable horror, this latest book by Gardner will keep you reading late into the night if it doesn’t scare you to death first! I couldn’t put it down and can’t wait for the next book in the series. A real home run. Keep them coming!!!

Awakening

This book was better than book number 1.I found it a bit more gory than I'd like, but the storyline was sound. Meral Mathews was a fine narrator.

Book 2 in a series that will surprise you.

I have to say I really enjoyed the first book. The 2nd book found me kind of fading Olin and out as I listened and I really had to focus. I found the pace discouraging. I wanted the action the drama of the first one...then I realized something this is like Star Wars empire strikes back. Starts off strong and then provides a ton of backstory and plot setups. And the book finished strong. All of this was necessary to set the 3rd book up for its wild ride but that’s for another review. My point is this. Get it listen to it. PAY ATTENTION it’s very important information and plot setup. And boy does it end with some serious action. Getting better with each book

I really liked the first book but this is a step up even over that.

Action Packed Second Chapter

Awakening picks up immediately where Defiance ended and is still pedal to the metal. This is a series and needs to be listened to in order so make sure you pick up book 1 first. Whereas the first book really layed the ground work for the series, this book really picks up on the action and really propels the good versus evil story further. I would say this focuses more on Gabriel, Othia, and Samantha versus Gabriel’s family or the mysterious people pulling the strings.

Where I felt like the first book really was an action thriller with a bit of suspense this book became a lot more of an action thriller with a bit of horror. Definitely liked the uptick in the graphic writing. I don’t think you can have a battle of good versus evil without some gore. The House of Horror was a strange plot piece but I am really excited to see where that goes. There also was a bit more of the mysterious archeology aspect which really brings in just a unique mixture of genres.

I still am enjoying the cast of characters. I liked the focus on Gabriel’s piece of the story as he is really my favorite character and I really want to see where his path leads. In general, all the characters are great though so this is really heading down a road where I can’t wait to see who everyone really is and what side of the line they are standing on.

Meral Mathews is a really good narrator and he continues to provide a stellar performance. The confidence and quality of his narration coupled with his spot on character voices really brought a lot of excitement and life to the story. I really liked his demon voice. Hearing him do that really made me smile.

Awakening

This was a really good followup to Defiance. I thought it was written better and really got me into the story. I am looking forward to seeing where the series goes. This book is darker and more twisted than Defiance, but it moves the story along really well.
