About this listen

When two teenagers break into a house on a remote lake in search of prescription drugs, what starts as a simple burglary turns into a nightmare for all involved. Emmett Burr has secrets he's been keeping in his basement for more than two decades, and he'll do anything to keep his past from being revealed. As he gets the upper hand on his tormentors, the lines blur between victim, abuser, and protector.

Personal tragedy has sent former police officer Ben Packard back to the small Minnesota town of Sandy Lake in search of a fresh start. Now a sheriff's deputy, Packard is leading the investigation into the missing teens, motivated by a family connection. As clues dry up and time runs out to save them, Packard is forced to reveal his own secrets and dig deep to uncover the dark past of the place he now calls home.

Unrelentingly suspenseful and written with a piercing gaze into the dark depths of the human soul, this thriller introduces listeners to a complicated new hero and forces us to consider the true nature of evil.

Great multi-layed stories & colorful characters- all coming together in the end for a fantastic finalé. I feel a sequel coming about Nick 😉

Loved this book!

This story had a couple of surprises for me:
1. The villian was kind of pitiful himself, and the victim was doing something wrong to get in the predicament, so it was hard to feel complete sympathy or complete revulsion for either - which is good. I found it more realistic.
2. There was a big plot arc about a gay character (or 2). This isn't a spoiler, you find out early on. The book wasn't in LGBTQ category and it's not mentioned in the summary, but I know some people aren't interested in reading about gay struggles so it's worth giving a heads-up.

I enjoyed the writing style and the story, and will try the next Ben Packard story.

Great character development

I have not read anything by this author before, but look forward to the next book in the series. It was hard to put down and I finished it in one day.

Nicely paced story

Loved this! There is a review up above that mentions sexuality and same sex relationships warning readers and that couldn’t be more far from the truth. This storyline was tasteful, easy and not at all the foundation of the book. It was very well written and sounds like we may get a sequel! Here’s to hoping!!!

So so good!!!

Intended to be the first in a series? Ending left room for this but is a stand alone novel. Characters likable. Bad guy almost could be pitied citing some possibility open for remorse but this is lost once his current crime and past evils spill out. Although beginning slow (as noted by another reviewer) the story quickly engages the listener. Then the plot not so original but different enough moves a long at a quick pace and suitably horrifying for this kind of novel/genre.

Most of the story is told from the pov of the protagonist and antagonist. Not sure I would listen to this again. Would listen to a second in a series.

Narrator good although a bit slick.

Good start for a debut writer

Very middle of the road book. The main character is the most fleshed out while the side characters seem kind of flat. This author has potential and will most likely get better over time. I would read the next one when/if it comes out.

Ok book. Not bad. Not great.

This is an outstanding novel with many vulnerable, yet likable people, and a really good monster as the villain. Linda Jones is an amazing narrator. I will be looking for more books by this author and more books narrated by Ms Jones.

Finally, a really different book!

I really enjoyed this story and how so many things were I laced together. The set up for the next book was placed very well, didn’t seem forced to the overall book at all and I look forward to it.

Good story and set-up for next book
