About this listen

From the author of the popular Blaze of Glory series comes the story of an angry boy, a lonely horse, and no possums at all.

Ben’s never been this unhappy. His parents got divorced, and he moved to a small town where he doesn’t fit in. He has no friends. Then, he meets a beautiful but suspicious black horse.

Panther is even more troubled than Ben. And unless Ben can convince Panther to trust people again, the horse’s sorrow may cost him his life.

Boy and horse help each other

A young person, after a parents divorce, is often adrift in emotional stress, when moved from home, friends and school, that stress is elevated, leading to actions that out of character.
The same could be said of animals, wrenched from their normal environment and security, forced to move to a place they have never experienced, they in turn can behave in a way which is contra to their norm.
So, we have two characters, boy and horse, both displaced and emotionally raw. Can they help each other in their new situations.
I have written this review after listening to the audio rendition of this book. I found the voice impersonation entertaining, as well as it adding depth to a wonderful story.

A Boy and a Horse

This is a wonderful story about a boy named Ben and a horse named Panther (formerly "Mortimer"). Both are struggling to cope with the pain of their respective situations; Ben, for having to move to a new and unfamiliar location after his parents' divorce, and Panther, for being forced to move to a new and unfamiliar location after heartlessly being separated from his mother.

This is a great story: sweet, well-written, suspenseful and containing a positive message. It's a story both kids and adults will enjoy. The narrator does an excellent job-she has a voice that easily communicate emotion, whether anger, sorrow, dread, frustration, etc.

I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review.

Touching

As a kid I read every horse book I could find. Awesome Possum would have been among my favorites. It's an excellent mid-grade book.

Aimed at kids and that is just fine

Not for me but for the kids

Personally i don’t get much out of this book. But my kids enjoyed it very much, which is probably who it’s aimed asot. So given that knowledge, i think this book is really good. You can review a comedy like you would review a horror movie and give it a bad review because it didn’t scare you at all. It was not it’s intention

Wonderful- For child, youth, and adult alike!

This was a very refreshing book. This book is mainly catered towards kids. However, the way it was written, it is enjoyable for adults alike! In a way, this story reminds me the movies 'The Black Stallion', and 'The Black Stallion Returns'.

All the authors did a fantastic job integrating realistic, fantasy, and imagination to a level that I know that all kids, youth, AND adults will enjoy! A simple, short, but awesome book! Plus, Narrator Heather Auden did a fantastic job with the voices. I look forward to looking to more of her narrations, and the authors books!

I have read kids stories, and this book, without a doubt, is an Awesome Possum book!

Heartwarming Story <3

Darn you, made me cry!! LOL the thought of any animal feeling that sad just literally breaks my heart. I just can't bear it, but I so enjoyed listening to this story!

I'm a big fan of the Garzon family, lovely writing and really moving - to the point of tears, and I'm not a crier lol!
I am a huge animal lover, and nothing is more important than us loving one another. I wish every animal on this planet could be loved -- we all can do our part.

Great story, lovely writing and narration! Highly recommended :)

Ben and Panther

I so enjoyed this book by M Garzon. I had originally listened to it with a more exuberant narrator, and then again now with Heather S Auden. Both audiobook versions are well done, and the story is fantastic. I loved how Ben developed his special relationship with Panther in this book and the other children. The story is heartwarming and kept my attention, so I can easily say, this book appeals to all ages. I really like how the author is able to write for all ages and provide vivid imagery and endearing characters. I will continue to listen to more books by this author. The narrator did a great job providing distinguished voices for the various characters. I love the expression "Awesome Possum" as its used in this story too!

Wonderful Heartwarming Children's Story

This is a story of boy who has gone through some major life changes with his parents divorce and a move. He starts going to a near-by barn and take some riding lessons. While there he finds a horse who's sad and going through major changes too and if not helped soon could be sold at auction for meat. It's a great discussion point book and explains things in a way a young child can understand. This book was also just a fun read. Since it's a story of a 10 year old boy I'd say it's geared for elementary and Middle School children, although I enjoyed it as an adult as well. The narrator did a fabulous job and was a joy to listen to.
