About this listen

Stories contained in this volume:

"The Enterprising Necromancer":

In the town of Name Pending, Wyoming, Elijah Potbury does brisk business as the territory's only practicing necromancer. For a reasonable fee, he'll raise any friend or family member. When a local rancher complains of his newly resurrected ranch hand being defective and demands a full refund, Potbury refuses to comply. The incident is reported to the town marshal, who investigates.

"Low Noon":

Potbury the necromancer sends out an invitation to out-of-town gunfighters to challenge his own shootist, the late Nat McGrue. McGrue is slow to draw and can't aim or even see well, but he has one distinct advantage over professional gunfighters: he can't be killed, no matter how many times he is hit.

"Quarter Past Death":

The Calhoun gang rides into Name Pending to avenge their youngest brother's defeat at the hands of Nat McGrue. During the ensuing high-stakes gun battle, each side tries to outwit the other in a bid to come out on top.

"Master Bullocke's Wrath":

Life at Mrs. Broadhurst's bordello is turned upside down when the malign spirit of a 17th-century Puritan from Virginia mistakes Miss Henrietta for his long-lost wife. Clients flee and the ladies for hire lock themselves in their rooms to stay out of the ghost's clutches. Faced with financial ruin, Mrs. Broadhurst turns to Potbury the necromancer in her hour of need.

"The Imp Within the Gunfighter":

A fierce and ruggedly handsome gunfighter named Calkins comes to Name Pending. Women swoon over him and men despise and fear him. As time passes, speculation mounts that he is not what he appears to be. The reality is something no townsperson could have guessed.

"Mister Seven’s Short-Circuit":

Whilst traveling back from Paris via the airship Azincourt, Mrs. Broadhurst and Miss Henrietta are introduced to the mysterious Mr. Seven, owner of the airship. Part-human, part-mechanical, Seven's rotting body is about to expire for a second time. In desperate need of a qualified necromancer, Mr. Seven sets course for Name Pending in the hope that Elijah Potbury can resurrect him.
