About this listen

Here, in his own words, is the true story of America's wildest flying hero, of his extraordinary heroism, and of his greatest battle of all-the fight to survive.

The World War II air war in the Pacific needed tough men like Colonel Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron. The legendary Marine Corps officer and his bunch of misfits, outcasts, and daredevils gave a new definition to "hell-raising" - on the ground and in the skies.

Pappy himself was a living legend-he personally shot down 28 Japanese planes, and won the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross. He broke every rule in the book doing so, but when he fell into the hands of the vengeful Japanese his real ordeal began.

the real Pappy Boyington

I've seen the BS show Black Sheep Squadron many many times and had no idea how full of crap it was. I had no idea that Pappy was a prisoner of war by the Japanese for almost 2 years a very interesting story. sometimes Heroes aren't what you think they were

Amazing man!

As a former aviation Marine myself I think Pappy is the man! Amazing story of survival.
That being said, they should have picked somebody different to narrate. well he does have a very good voice, his mannerisms aren't that of a United States Marine. I'm not even talking about his little lisp.
He was too exasperated at the end of most sentences.
He was the cross between Niles Crane from the TV show Frasier, Forrest Gump and a high school girl in an exasperated argument with her parents. I've listened to a lot of audio books and I can think of 10 narrators right off the top of my head that would have done a better job of narrating a Marine Corps based book

Fun reminder of the show

I read this as a kid and was disappointed it wasn’t like the tv show. Now I appreciate it for being his life story during the war. I wish the narrator pronounced the Japanese words better though. It was still a fun listen.

Annoying

It’s like having Forest Gump reading to you! The narrator emphasizes the last word or syllable of almost every sentence. Just think of Gump saying “ JennAY.”

Narrator not suited to the material

I was really looking forward to listening on a road trip but the narrators inflection and tone tended to be extremely irritating. I couldn’t listen to anymore after a hour
