About this listen

Battle: The Story of the Bulge, John Toland's first work of military history, recounts the saga of beleaguered American troops as they resisted Hitler's deadly counter offensive in World War II's Battle of the Bulge - and turned it into an Allied victory. It is a gripping work, painstakingly researched and imbued with such vivid detail that listeners will feel as though they themselves witnessed these events. This is a book not to be missed by anyone interested in this tumultuous era of our world's history.

This nonfiction account is told in a very entertaining way & the reader is as good as their is.
About the 126 captives executed my understanding is they were from a African American regiment & if so it should have been noted along with the fact that for many years after WW1 the French brought in Black Africans from their African colony & allowed them to Rape German women in occupied west Germany without consequence.
The Battle is a fair account with this one exception however still 5 stars.

Top notch

long has the story's of the Bulge been told and movies have been made recalling this historic battle, but the telling of this epic battle will take you through eye whiteness accounts and of the individual memoirs that have been recounted and told as remembered. the telling of this story is a riveting account of history if it was a book you could not put it down for it would be a page turner. Great narration, Great story a must listening for any historical buff.

Great tribute to the American soldier and our military leadership. It illustrates why this is rightly acknowledged as the Greatest Generation.

An Important History

The many personal stories made this relatable. Also presented Patton as a much more humane person who really cared for his men.

Enjoyed the depth.

Any additional comments?

Great description of the battle.

Besides the Audible edition, I also had Amazon send me the hardbound book, because I love to follow a battle on maps, and satellite views. The hardbound contained about five useful maps, which help a lot in the case of Bastogne, but not so much elsewhere.

There is another factor for map followers: Location names. Internet map searches require properly-spelled location names, and you don't get that from Audible.

I listened once through, then went on Amazon and bought the hardbound, plus a good map. Now I am ready to sit down and REALLY enjoy a second listen, while following along with maps!

A great collection of stories from the generals to the GIs fighting. Although I'll never truely know, it gave me a new feel for what it must of been like.

Loved everything about it. Can't believe I hadn't read it years ago. It has stood the test of time and gives a great overview of the entire battle. I learned a lot about the later stages that I didn't know. Narrator was great. Can't recommend this enough for any fan of military history.

Toland brings the Battle of the Bulge alive by stringing together the actual battlefield communications of the men who fought there in a way that makes this historical account read like a historical novel! Excellent! Highly recommend!

SOLID READ!

I enjoyed the depth in which the author fleshed out the details of the people involved in that hellish ordeal.

The stories of the participants were riveting

Overall this is a good book. The author gives good high level information of the battle and then drills down to the boots on the ground. I felt that the narrator could have been better when articulating the conversations between actual people rather than using his same reading style.
