About this listen
Between life and death lies fate and one hell of a fight
Since childhood, Dawn has "lost time." She awakens in strange places, far away from her last memory, confused by the recall of events that cannot be true. Back then, her parents dragged her to counsellors, insisted on medication and wrapped her in cotton balls. Now, all grown up and a single mom, all she wants is to be the best parent she can to her son, while the fear of enduring a sudden “lost time” episode looms over her daily life.
On this afternoon, only 50 yards from where Dawn has just dropped her son for his weekly guitar lesson, an event is playing out involving a troubled young woman.
Kylie is having a bad day. She’s had it with her dead-end cashier job which has bored her witless from the start. Her boss is on her back every second of every minute, the moron ex-boyfriend hasn’t stopped harassing her all week and at this single moment she hates the entire world. As she drives from the supermarket lot her phone buzzes, and as usual she picks up. “Don’t drive and text”, everyone says, but that’s never been a problem for her because she’s careful.
Except this afternoon, when karma intervenes and Dawn’s and her life collide in the most horrific of accidents.
When the worst tragedy a mother can face occurs, Dawn is devastated and broken, and she doesn’t know how she’ll survive. That is, until 10 days later when she discovers, somehow, she’s been given an incredible gift. Her "lost time" has taken her back again to the morning of the accident. Now saving her son is within her power but there’s a twist she hadn’t figured. She can’t change or do anything differently because she’s become merely a passenger in her own body.
Only one thing might save her son, but for that she’ll need to discover a simple truth before time runs out. For between life and death lies fate and one hell of a fight.

Story
This was not the first-time that rookie cop Michael Chambers had found himself stuck in this broken-down police vehicle while the rain bucketed down outside. In fact, this kind of "bad luck" had happened almost every time he’d been assigned car 291. Usually, he’d get a flat, or the locks would jam, or the damned on-board computer would freeze. 291, though, had a bloody and tragic history, which might explain why this piece of metallic crap seemed so intent on driving him crazy - excuse the pun.

Story
The terror begins in a suburban café with seven people brutally murdered by an axe-wielding maniac. The killer is left dead at the scene and that should have been the end of a rare tragedy. But within days, in the very same city, more mass killings occur. Ten eldercare facility residents die in an arson-lit blaze. Then a mother attending a family gathering embarks on a terrifying gun rampage. All the killers are now dead, leaving behind unanswerable questions.

It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

"Something is murdering my men." Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims. When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore - who just happens to be Jewish - to shed some light on the mysterious happenings.

Excellent and suspenseful story
Would you consider the audio edition of Back Again to be better than the print version?
Even though I loved reading Back Again, listening was so much fun. The novel reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode, and the spooky and suspenseful qualities came through even more so when I listened to the story. I have enjoyed reading all of Susan May's books, and now I look forward to listening to her titles.
Have you listened to any of Anne Johnstonbrown’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I wanted to listen to it all at once. This book helped me stay in shape...Since I usually listen while walking or working out, this helped me exercise more.

H.G. Wells meets the Twilight Zone
Would you listen to Back Again again? Why?
After I read the original novella, I read the novel, and then I listened to the book on Audible. Each time I enjoyed it even more than the last. The unusual characters and circumstances will keep you riveted. As the characters developed and shifted, my opinions and feelings about them did the same. Even though I knew the ending as I listened, it was still very suspenseful and gripping. This is a new twist on Time Travel that all will appreciate, with plot twists to go along with it. Stay tuned for the author's comments, which are very informative.

A Mother’s Nightmare
This story took so many twists and turns. Is this a supernatural event? Is this a medical issue that is making headlines? Susan May does an incredible job of taking her stories and weaving them through the imagination. Who IS Jett? I had so many thoughts and guesses—and in the end all my theories were wrong. But the one theme prevailed—a mother’s love for her child knows no bounds. She will do ANYTHING to save her child. I recommend this book. Great story, great narration. I look forward to Susan’s next book.

A more chilling version of Groundhog Day.
I just downloaded this yesterday and I've already finished it, even listening at work for a little while today. The incredible detail that goes into this story makes it agonizing and enjoyable at the same time, with suspense building all along. I was starting to get frustrated with Kylie until the sun broke through and I discovered the process of learning she was experiencing. Chet is just how I would like to be; accepting and loving and encouraging. Dawn wasn't very likable at first, but then I realized she's just like many of us, struggling to be a good parent, a good neighbor, more accepting of those around us. The performance just moved it along at a brisk pace, keeping me captivated.

I Love Conundrum- especially with a life at stake!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes: Back Again was monotonous but very much filled with emotion, action and enough frustration to keep me hooked.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Back Again?
The most memorable part was when the connection between Dawn and the cashier came into play. That was brilliant!
What didn’t you like about Anne Johnstonbrown’s performance?
Johnstonbrown messed up regularly on her voice impersonations. There were times when narration was given in a child's voice - when it was clearly not a thought or a statement. Also, her voices didn't fit the ages and she just became annoying. Thankfully, she didn't hurt the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Yes: Though Dawn losing her son was pretty tough, I became calloused after it happened several times. What did get me excited was when she and Kylie, the cashier connected! I was like, "YES!"
Any additional comments?
I truly enjoyed Back Again. It was a huge conundrum, but one I'd endure again, and again, and again!

If only
great book! A great reminder of the gift of life, and children. In real life there are no do overs, only moving on and learning from past mistakes.
The narration was hard to listen to at times. The characters voices were overdone. 13 and 15 year old girls sounded like they were 5 and there were some very nasally voices as well.
All together though, I would recommend as I truly enjoyed the story.

Heart Breaking and Relatable
This was my favorite Susan May book so far. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. I cried more at this book than any other book I have read. I could relate to the main character, Dawn, because I would stop at nothing to help my child. There was joy and sorrow mixed up with the super natural. Perfect combination. If you're a mother, this is a must read.
