Ties that bind...

Danai Liao-Centrella is many things: Solaris gladiator; proud military commander; successful diplomat. All of those roles pale beneath perhaps the heaviest responsibility of anyone in the Capellan Confederation: To speak the truth to its ruler, Chancellor Daoshen Liao. He is the undeniable dictator of hundreds of worlds. Mighty armies move at his command. Billions of lives hang on his every decision.

Against that, she must speak the truth.

And the truth is, the war with House Davion must end. Because there is a greater danger looming: The Republic of the Sphere, hiding behind its impenetrable fortress. When that wall comes down, the Confederation must be ready. It cannot be distracted. Danai will pay whatever price necessary to make Daoshen see that.

And that price will be heavy. It will force her to take on a role unlike any other: Servant of the people. In the Confederation, the people are the heart of the state. When - not if - the wall falls, Danai and her regiment will be ready.

They'll have to be ready, because behind the wall the Republic regiments are finally ready to come out of hiding. On worlds like Elgin, Hall, and Liberty, Republic forces are prepared: Well-trained, and armed with weapons the Capellans have never seen.

When BattleMechs clash, Danai will have to choose between serving the Chancellor or serving the people.

One of the weakest Battletech books I've listened to. Narrator is ok. As for the story, I did like that this book focused on the Capellan's, which are rarely focused on. The story had some good points, but a lot of it was a slog to get through. Listen to the other books first, and if you have to have more, give this one a try at that point.

Meh

I like the story but it left me with lots of Lore questions. Not sure if its the writer or the Narrator but its kinda odd, like pauses or breaths that seem miss placed. still good just a bit hard to fallow at the start.

Good book lots of questions now...

first depiction I've seen of Capellans that is actually believable. I'm tired of the mustache twirling supervillain nonsense. cool characters and fun action scenes

Don't overlook this one

Great entry to the Ilclan era. Excellent narration by Lisa Lee. I hope to hear more from her in future bt books.

Excellent BattleTech Fiction

It was tolerable, she has good pronunciation, the story was well written! Women need to stop wanting equality, it destroys, more, than fixs. Cheers!

Even tho its a female narrator, it wasn’t terrible

It was a fun book overall; written from the perspective of arguably the "bad guys" as they invade and conquer planets. The main character had growth, and reasonable believability.

the voice acting was really quite good for a battletech novel; which I was very happy about.

There was no resolution to the novel, however. It just sort of ended. Also, many of the plotlines throughout were unresolved and unexplained.

Acceptable Foray into Battletech

Schmetzer has become one of my favorite BT writers. Here he delivers a solid story about the inheritor of the Allard family Mech- Yen Lo Wang.
If I were to describe the book it is Pygmalion with walking tanks. The downside of the book is it feels a bit like a sideshow to the main event invasion of Terra.

The Narrator (Liisa Lee) did a fabulous job with pronouncing the Capellan ranks throughout the book. I would gladly listen to her narrate more Battletech.

Solid Battletech

The story is not too bad. Not amazing though. I do like the humanizing of Capellans as something more than a Chinese Communist generic bad guy. The narrator however needs more practice. Some of the Chinese names she struggled with, had a ton of off putting pauses, and I never felt any tension while she read. It took me quite a while to get through this book because the narrator just did not convey the right feel. And apparently every tough sergeant is from Texas or something. If you want to listen to BattleTech on Audible, you might struggle a bit with this one.
