An unknown enemy waits for war.
From the bottom of the oceans of the world a hidden threat stalks mankind—probing, testing our weapons and defenses, biding time to strike. In the summer of 2039, this aquatic foe unleashes surprise attacks against coastal cities around the globe. Mankind faces a sophisticated new enemy, arrived from the depths of space and lurking in the dark blackness of the seas.
The United States and the rest of the world are ill prepared for such an attack.
Humanity’s only hope are ASHURs, powerful armored combat suits named after the Assyrian god of war. The fight for survival will require ingenuity, cunning, and a furious application of destructive violence against the most unrelenting enemy mankind has ever known!
Tom Clancy and the Expanse meets Mecha-charged combat in this thrilling series that pits humanity, world governments, and deadly alien invaders against each other.
The fight for tomorrow begins with the initial splashdown....

New IP firmly established.

Breath of fresh air

This is a breath of fresh air. It has a thought out plot, and a variety of characters. The author uses a template similar to World War Z, in how the book transitions between characters, perspectives, and locations. All while being cohesive and consistent.
The narrator is solid. Brings emotion and tone to each character but also the situation they find themselves in.

For starters, it’s not set in the far future like the 31st century, it’s only the not so distance future. The story starts in the year 2039, so the setting is more grounded, literally and metaphorically.
The premise of the story is not a space opera with warring houses and clans vying for control of the galaxy. Instead it’s more of an alien invasion, with giant creatures emerging from the sea battled by mech suits, kind of like Pacific Rim.
Much of the story is spent introducing the many different characters with occasional competing interests, such as:
- a reclusive tech CEO
- an ambitious journalist and media star on the hunt for her latest scoop
- a disabled military veteran turned drug dealer
- another veteran in the twilight of his career, wishing he spent more time with his family when he had the chance
- a teenager in the perpetual generational struggle against her parents
And then, all the action happens. Admittedly it takes most of the book to lay the groundwork because this is a brand new IP that will hopefully go well beyond books. It already has a comic also by Blaine Pardoe, and in due time will hopefully have its own miniature table top war game and video games.
I was so hooked on the story that I finished the audiobook in less than a week and am already planning to read the next book in this series.
Great introduction to a new IP!

Solid writing with multiple points of view fleshing out the coming storm from a threat that encompasses the existential dread of the deep ocean.
