About this listen

Brigitte Gabriel lost her childhood to militant Islam. In 1975 she was 10 years old and living in Southern Lebanon when militant Muslims from throughout the Middle East poured into her country and declared jihad against the Lebanese Christians, which became the first front in a worldwide jihad of fundamentalist Islam against non-Muslim peoples. For seven years, Brigitte and her parents lived in an underground bomb shelter, without running water or electricity and very little food. Because They Hate is a political wake-up call. Brigitte warns that the United States is threatened by fundamentalist Islamic theology in the same way Lebanon was - radical Islam will stop at nothing short of domination of all non-Muslim countries. Fiercely articulate and passionately committed, Gabriel tells her own story as well as outlines the history, social movements, and religious divisions that have led to this critical historical conflict.

Critic reviews

"A compelling and captivating personal story with a powerful lesson about threats to freedom in our time." (R. James Woolsey, Director of Central Intelligence, 1993-95)

"Brigitte Gabriel's story is at once intensely personal and possesses global significance....[Her] words should be read, and studied carefully, by all the law enforcement and government officials of the West as well as by everyone who values freedom." (Robert Spencer, author of The Politically Incorrect Guide to Islam (and the Crusades))

Very good account but.....

Very compelling book. I agree with the reviewer 'Dale' that his is a frightful telling of her life story in Lebanon, being terrorized by the Arab-Muslim states that surround it.
I found her memoirs a bit too detailed in parts. I know ahe was trying to convey a one-time idyllic life as a child but the exact color and shape of her 6th birthday dress are rather irrelevant. I also aggree that she seems to place Israel and Israelis on pedestals, which is surely not deserved in the grand scheme of things. She blames the Carter and Clinton administrations for being 'soft' on terrorism (a favorite Bush campaign rhetoric). Her analysis of the situation is, however, generalized and she cannot offer sound solutions (in her defense, none of us are able to) as the gaining popularity of Islam seems to be a run-away-train leading to destruction of the west as we know it.

She gets a bit preachy in the end, reciting some examples over and over, but nonetheless, this is a must listen as it is important in that it contributes to our understanding that Muslims worldwide are following the teachings of the Quar'an, which demands complete conversion for all of mankind. She rightfully points out that there really isn't any 'moderate' Islam, and that as Americans and Europeans, we need to wake up and see this fact for what it is if we want to continue living in a free society.

WOW.

she certainly has an agenda, but it is this very agenda and her life experiences that produced it that make her impassioned plea so powerful. It is impossible to accurately judge a religion based on one or two books. But this book certainly makes me want to research Islam in much greater depth. Some of the concepts such as dishonesty is okay if it furthers Islam, or a later ruling in the Hadith overrules previous ones, are worth much further research and study. I have always wondered why moderate Muslims do not speak up more about their religion being hijacked. Her reasoning on this, that moderate Muslims are not so moderate and thus do not speak up much, seems to me to be quite strong. If Islam truly is as she says it is, and my intuition tells me there is more than a grain of truth in her depiction of Islam, then the Western world needs to wake up and smell the roses, or the thorns!

Information Everyone Should Know

This is excellent until toward the end. The author becomes a bit overbearing and repeatative in her zeal. Still, I think we have much to learn from the author's experiences and opinions.

An amazing life story and the reality of islam

Amazing story. Hard to listen to some of her trials but they must be heard. She is very smart and adequately lays out the intent and radical nature of islam

Must Read

This book should be read by every liberal anti-American. There is plenty of factual evidence presented for most readers to realize that the Muslim doctrine can not coexist with the American Constitution or Bill of Rights. All WOMEN should read to understand that the Muslim doctrine considers you PROPERTY!!!

Wake Up America

Do politicians in this country ever read about the sworn enemies of our nation and our way of life? I urge all Americans to wake up and start voting based on information, not on media hype. The overwhelming evidence that says over and over again that Islamic extremists are plotting the destruction of this country should be heeded. I do not like the war in Iraq any more than the next guy, but the case made again by this author tells me loud and clear that we cannot back out of Iraq and show yet again that America's resolve to protect herself is not there.

Brigitte Gabriel very discrete

The author describes some gruesome things without being extremely graphic. This I can handle. She tells a story that Americans need to hear. She explains the why's of the Middle Eastern world. She tells of some things that Americans with a background of relative peace would not notice but that are necessary to our own survival in the very near future. This is a must read for Christians.

First 2/3 = fasincating, final third = GOP rant

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd definitely recommend the first 2/3 to anyone wanting to do more about the history of radical islam and how it became more powerful. not sure i'd recommend it blanketly.

What other book might you compare Because They Hate to and why?

Not sure there is a specific book other than the ones she has written, but it's in the category of international/foreign memoirs with a social context.

What does Brigitte Gabriel bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Her performance actually helped save the book. She has a great tone and passion and you really know she's talking about her own life.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

more reinforcement that radical islam has only one focus - sharia law for the planet.

Wake up America

Would you consider the audio edition of Because They Hate to be better than the print version?

No equal to. The printed version is better for reference study.

What other book might you compare Because They Hate to and why?

Just starting my education, nothing to compare it to.

What about Brigitte Gabriel’s performance did you like?

Loved it! The woman relived much of the horror telling this story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No
