About this listen

Belle Starr is a romantic tale about the notorious bandit queen Belle Starr and her fiery relationships with some of the most infamous men of her time, including Jesse James and Cole Younger. The story follows her from her rebellious teen years to her marriages to men who often stepped on the wrong side of the law. Although she never married him, Cole Younger was the love of her life. They were kindred spirits and star-crossed lovers.

Set against a changing land after the Civil War, this is a story of a group of renegades trying to find their place among the turmoil and love among the ruins of their previous way of life.

Editorial reviews

Barbara Edelman gives a lively performance of Deborah Camp's book on notorious Civil War-era bandit queen Belle Starr. This romantic retelling of Starr's tumultuous love affairs with some of the most infamous men of her time - including Jesse James and Cole Younger - lets Edelman's skill in recreating accents shine through the characters' spirited dialogue. She slips easily into different voices while keeping up the momentum of the story as it takes listeners from Starr's teenaged years to the heartbreaking end of her relationship with Younger.

One of the best books I’ve listened to! The characters were so real that I hated for book to end!

Belle Starr

I grew up in Arkansas and always heard about Belle Starr. My Grandmother had a paperback novel about her (wish I had it now), so I have had a fascination with her for many years. I wish I had noticed before downloading this audiobook that it was part of Audible Escape (think "Romance").

The story was loosely based on Belle's life, but focused more on her romances with several historical figures and less on other parts of the story. The book was pretty steamy in some places (more than I really like in an audiobook), but once again, that is my fault for not doing more research before listening.

I have to say that nobody in this entire book was likeable, except maybe the child Pearl. Belle was a true harridan, all of the men were either weak or less than likeable outlaws, and the older women in the book were horrible in their own ways. All in all, I just wanted to finish the book in order to see what happened.

The narrator did a pretty decent job, but some of the voices were either overly grating (Belle) or stereotypical (Sam Starr). I sped up the narration in order to be able to finish the book.

Belle

I’m not sure if everything in this book is fact. I watched a History Channel Documentary on Belle & it contradicts this book.
I did not enjoy the screechy voices of some characters either.

Narration was really bad

I couldn't get passed the horrible narration. I live about 20 minutes from Carthage and can guarantee we don't talk like that. Plus the men all sounded like different versions of Steve Urkel. I didn't even make it to chapter 4

written Good

this book was written well. If you can listen to words and avoid the whiney narrator s voice . The story and characters are intriguing, but this NARRATOR just messed up the whole thing. makes Belle Star sound like a stupid, simpering girl.

It was fun to listen to this outlaw story. There was romance, action, and heartbreak. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.

I finished it

I am sorry but while I did finish the entire book, I honestly did not really care for it. The story was ok, the narration was hard to listen to. I did not like the skipping over years of time. This story was not really a love story. It was a story of this woman's hard life. I have read and listened to literally 1000s of books over many years. I prefer historical romance novels with a lot of hot romance where the couple end up together in the end against all odds. I am not that particular about the time period or the country it takes place in. If you look for a similar storyline then this book may not be for you either. Sorry, I really hate writing a negative review for an author.
