About this listen

In this thrilling gothic suspense debut by Sara Foster in the tradition of Rosamund Lupton and Sophie Hannah, a young mother searches Yorkshire’s windswept moors for the truth behind her husband’s mysterious disappearance.

The answers are hiding Beneath the Shadows

When Grace’s husband, Adam, inherits an isolated North Yorkshire cottage, they leave the bustle of London behind to try a new life. A week later, Adam vanishes without a trace, leaving their baby daughter, Millie, in her stroller on the doorstep. The following year, Grace returns to the tiny village on the untamed heath. Everyone - the police, her parents, even her best friend and younger sister - is convinced that Adam left her. But Grace, unable to let go of her memories of their love and life together, cannot accept this explanation. She is desperate for answers, but the slumbering, deeply superstitious hamlet is unwilling to give up its secrets.

As Grace hunts through forgotten corners of the cottage searching for clues and digs deeper into the lives of the locals, strange dreams begin to haunt her. Are the villagers hiding something, or is she becoming increasingly paranoid? Only as snowfall threatens to cut her and Millie off from the rest of the world does Grace make a terrible discovery. She has been looking in the wrong place for answers all along, and she and her daughter will be in terrible danger if she cannot get them away in time.

I am new to Audible and have only chosen mysteries so far. The story was good and I liked the narration. The narrator’s voice makes a huge difference for me and this one was very pleasant to listen to.

Liked it!

Narrator was good, but steuggled in a couple of places. Story keeps you guessing and thinking about what's next.

Great listen!

As an audible plus member I received this book for free, but I will definitely be reading more of this author.

Well written, narrator was great

Not exactly sure what it is about this story. However, I couldn’t put it down. This author pulled me in and wouldn’t let go. The “fluff” was minimal and the story wasn’t anything new.... but it was great! Great read.

Love!

I think my title sums it up fairly concise. No high points or lows. No point did I feel like I couldn't put the book down nor an urge to return to see what was coming. Not suspenseful or spooky (I'm thinking that was the intention of the author but I never got this).

Basics: A young mother returns to the home where her husband has disappeared to find answers with her toddler. Enter the large dysfunctional family that takes until the end of the book to figure out how they all tie in, a sister, a friend, and a local cop. My favorite character is Ben & his dog who are the redeeming quality of this whole book. Take them out and there would be no book.

I would not buy this book to read. I would also pick another if I had one I knew I wanted to read first. However, if free and you have nothing else left, it is fine for the afternoon.

Meh

Firstly, this book was a good way to pass the time. A good portion of the story kept me intrigued, though I felt like some of it was random filler that didn’t need to be there. Second, the plot was a bit far-fetched and seemed convoluted but with no real purpose. There were a lot of extra characters that played either no role or roles so small they didn’t matter to the story. I don’t know that I would recommend the book as something a person MUST read, but if you are looking for something to occupy some time, this one is a good option.

Decent listen but has a convoluted plot
