A manuscript illuminated with fantastical creatures said to have roamed the Garden of Eden, the bestiary has been handed down throughout the centuries by one of the Arab world's most prominent families. Commissioned to restore it is the beautiful young art curator Beth Cox. But it is Beth's husband, Carter - a paleontologist making his own dire discoveries in Los Angeles's famed La Brea Tar Pits - who will be led by the bestiary into a living, breathing menagerie of wonders and horrors.

Add:
an Iraqi aristocrat with deep dark secrets
human skeleton's found in the La Bria Tar Pits
A group of self-styled militia with some bad ideas
a former military man with a more than slightly crooked outlook on life
strip clubs
ancient manuscripts
what might be ghosts
a menagerie of animals that should not exist
Of course, mayhem ensues.
This is a fun read.
I did not realize when I began that this is actually a sequel to VIGIL by the same author.
Reading that first would doubtless make a few passages here make more sense.
If you have not read VIGIL you can get by just fine, but you will be wondering what is going on a couple of spots in the story.

What does Corey M. Snow bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I think that the narrator's performance helped make a mediocre story feel more worthwhile.Any additional comments?
This is my first experience with this author, and to be honest, I wasn't particularly impressed with this book. The subplots don't do a very good job supporting or complementing the main narrative, one of them feels like it's there to kind of set up the ending, but the other one feels like it doesn't really belong in the novel, because it has little impact on the primary action driving the story. I also felt a little cheated by the ending, in the sense that the "payoff" you expect to get doesn't really feel earned. Another reviewer said that this book is like if you were watchingJurassic Park and waiting to see the dinosaurs and they only show up in the last 15 minutes of the movie. I think that's a pretty fair explanation of why this book just didn't work for me.Moderately engaging, but wish there was more to it
