About this listen

"Amazing! One of the twistiest time-tales I've ever read..."—Diana Gabaldon

"Crichtonesque thrillers don't come much better than this intricate outing which combines a fantastic premise... with a closed-circle whodunit. Readers won't be able to turn the pages fast enough."—Publishers Weekly—Starred Review

From the worldwide bestselling author of The Extinction Trials, Departure, and The Atlantis Gene comes a new kind of sci-fi thriller: a time-travel murder mystery with a twist you'll never see coming.

Control the Past. Save the Future.

Dr. Sam Anderson is one of the most celebrated scientists in history. Ten years ago, he invented a device that changed the world forever. Now his life is about to be ripped apart—and his own creation may be to blame.

One fateful morning, Sam discovers that his girlfriend has been murdered and that his daughter is accused of the crime.

Sam believes she's innocent, but he can't prove it. There's only one thing he can do to save his daughter: confess to the crime. And so he does.

But in the future, murderers aren't sent to prison. They're sent to the past.

Thanks to Sam's invention–Absolom–the world's worst criminals are exiled forever, sent back to the time of the dinosaurs, where they live out their lives alone.

As Sam steps into the Absolom chamber to leave for the Late Triassic, he makes a promise: he will get back to his family, clear his name, and find the person who killed the woman he loved.

What Sam doesn't know is that there's a secret waiting for him in the past. And it might be his only hope of saving himself and his family.

Sam isn't the only one seeking justice. In the present, his daughter, Adeline, also embarks on a mission to find the person who framed her and tore her family apart. She's already lost her mother. She can't bear losing her father too.

As Adeline peels back the layers of the conspiracy against her family, she uncovers more questions than answers. Everyone around her is hiding a secret, including her legal guardian. And some people aren't what they seem.

Adeline soon finds herself in the midst of a mystery that stretches across the past, present, and future—and leads to a revelation that will change everything.

Lost in Time is more than a murder mystery about advanced technology and time travel. It's a heartwarming story about family and the lengths we might go to in order to save the ones we love—with a twist that will have you questioning everything you thought you knew since the first moment.

Had to concentrate on this one

I really had to concentrate on listening to this book. The storyline is amazingly twisted, but so good.
Recommended highly.

Excellent time loop

It contained all the best things I love about time travel stories. Where everything comes together and things start to click.

Time flies

Riddle's stories are engaging even if time travel is impossible. Often writers use time travel as a gimmick to compensate for their lack of imagination, but Riddle has plenty of imagination and for him it works.

This was a good book, give it a chance

I was skeptical about the back and forth nature of the storytelling and the incredibly short chapters, but then found out that it worked. It was lopsided initially in which story I was more interested in and wanted to read more about, but it soon flipped when things started to present themselves to further the story.

Not quite what I expected

This sounded very exciting from the description, and it definitely started strong. The premise of a murder mystery, time travel, and a man sent to the prehistoric past as punishment for something he didn't do was great. But part way through - too early in my opinion - I was surprised when the focus shifted to a different character doing much more mundane things, with the main character from the first part of the book largely ignored for significant stretches and the whole "prehistoric" adventure essentially ceased. Still a decent story worth a listen, but once things switch focus between the two main characters, the level of excitement drops a couple notches, and the time travel-related elements of the story get a lot more convoluted, making the last half not quite the spell-binding adventure you might want.

Tolerable (Spoiler at the end)

The mystery is intriguing enough to keep me listening until the end, but it wasn’t enjoyable. The writing is weak, as is its internal logic. I found myself rolling my eyes frequently.

I know nothing about the author, but it reads like it was written by Stanford alum who thinks tech can save the world, but failed to take enough social science or philosophy courses to help ground the story.

Then again, it is fiction and I appreciated the puzzle the plot provided.

The performance was not good. I found it helpful to slow the playback pace a bit.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***

Maybe it’s just me, but I would be miserable living a life that was all about repeating the same things another version of me had performed in the past! There are so many things I’d like to try in this life that I don’t have time or energy for—I’d want to use a second go to travel the paths not followed. Besides, how much fun can it be to take on challenges where you already know you’ll succeed??? That would get boring after a few years.

Good story if you can overlook a giant paradox

It was a great little story and it buttons up all the loopholes quite nicely... until it ends and you realize that the main character/ puppet master has a paradox that doesn't get solved.

**spoiler**

A character simply can't exist if they create themselves. Danielle didn't exist until Danielle created herself, and Danielle could not have created herself without Danielle.
The absurdity of a chicken laying an egg that will hatch into itself suggests that the chicken just magically begins its existence at some point in time.

Twists and turns

Great story that kept me engaged. Many plot twists that would trigger memories of previous parts of the story that tied them together. I had many "Oh yeah!" moments. Worth a listen!
