About this listen

Is almost $2,000 a lot to drop on someone else’s dinner, just to be a big shot? Hell yeah! But what if nobody notices that you--one of Time magazine’s “100 Most Influential People” in the world--picked up the tab?

In this meditation on celebrity, power, and a simple thank-you, Mindy Kaling takes the next charmed step in her path from Conan intern to mogul: picking up the entire tab for a famous A-lister. It’s an investment, right? He’ll be blown away by her class. They’ll be best friends forever. Forty thankless seconds later, who wouldn’t spiral into self-doubt, second-guessing, over-rationalizing, and anxious obsession?

Plus, bonus content! An up-close-and-personal look at what Mindy does all day, including “executive producing” and gift wrapping.

From the acclaimed writer, actor, director, producer, and New York Times bestselling author comes Nothing Like I Imagined. In these essays, Mindy Kaling shares the latest chapters of a multitasking life in Hollywood. Listen to them in a single sitting. They’re pitch-perfect.

Maybe I'm biased because I adore Mindy, but I really enjoyed this! Having her narrate this (like many of her other books) is always fun because when you've watched weeks worth of Kelly Kapoor and Mindy Lahiri, you can picture her saying everything based on how she sounds saying it! The bonus sneak peek into her life was so much fun :)

Made for an unexpectedly nice start to my day. Mindy is very personable and seems very reachable I'm going to listen to all of her other short stories with relish ( or maybe some ginger salmon)!

I loved this with the humor and the complete cringe-fest! Glad to see Mindy’s reactions got her into cool projects. Such a funny story!

It's good to realize the difference between generosity and giving. Sad that Mindy had to be slapped across the face (figuratively) to come to that realization. And to be confronted with it later. Tsk tsk tsk tsk tsk. Note - People with money don't need their tabs picked up. It's viewed for what it is - a bid to join the entourage. A "look at me" move. Also, true acts of generosity don't need to be advertised or quantified to anyone but the tax man.
