Wonderful and Heartwarming Story in Herman Melville

Jana Laiz has done an incredible job telling the life of Herman Melville through Eleanor, his ever persistent granddaughter. Through his stories and Eleanor’s inquisitive nature about her grandfather (and trying to learn his “secret”) shines a light on Herman Melville’s life filled with facts I never knew. I also loved how this story was written in such a personal way, bring to life this literary giant, and his granddaughter to life. Laiz has done an incredible job educating the reader, while making you laugh as feel as if you were really there with them listening to Melville. Her use of such incredible imagery brings history to life! Definite must have!

Good emerging Tween story

A pleasant, gentle story that should be an engaging listen, particularly for the tween who has a taste for history and story telling. Far too many books for this market strike some pretty tough notes, but Billy Budd in the Breadbox is one that would be enjoyable for everyone on that long car ride!

Melville as a Grandpa

Charming story about a girl who loves her Grandpa. Grandpa just happens to be Herman Melville and she knows he has a secret. She listens avidly to all his tales of adventure, but knows that he hasn't shared his secret yet. Until one night she learns the secret and promises to keep the confidence of her Grandfather. And she does, for many years, until she shares the secret with the world.
Family story for all ages to enjoy, The narrators did an excellent job bringing little Eleanor and Grandpa to life. Also enjoyable was the historical facts about Herman Melville's life from the author.
