About this listen

With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century. In this story of "kindred spirits", McAdams' touching and heartfelt narration proves she is just that - bonded on a deep level to this shimmering classic.

When aging brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help with chores around their farm, Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, neither is prepared for the feisty and imaginative redheaded girl who is mistakenly brought to them instead. Nor are they prepared for the way in which she will change their lives. Through a series of hilarious misadventures, Anne's uncompromising spirit makes her a striking presence in the close-knit village, bringing new friendships, first crushes, and, for her foster parents, a love and openness unimaginable before her arrival.

"Listeners will relish this production of L.M. Montgomery's classic.... As Anne, McAdams's delivery is light and breathy and ever so speedy, but clear and eloquent." ( AudioFile)

Childhood Revisited

This is a book I loved the first time I read it. I have since then read the others in the series and have seen the movie with Megan Follows. I may be an old lady Marilla's age now, but it still has the ability to take me to Green Gables.

I hate that I likes a "Girl's Book"

So, the ONLY reason why I even read this book was as an act of love for my wife. I was POSITIVE this would be the stupidest, girliest book ever. It wasn't. I enjoyed this so much.
I came away that is must be emotionally exhausting to be Anne Shirley. I now understand my wife better and we she is always emotionally exhausted.

Such a great book

Rachel McAdams does an excellent job with this book and of course the book itself is amazing.

Wow, great performance!

This was such a delightful listen. This is one that I listened to from beginning to end without stopping for a break to listen to another. Rachel nails her role as the narrator, and brings this classic to life. Anne's character made me laugh and emotionally connect with the story. It was fun getting lost in this book and forgetting about reality for a short time.

Perfect narrator

Rachel McAdams is the perfect narrator for this beloved classic. She captures the voice and spirit of Anne beautifully. I couldn’t have loved this revisit to my believed childhood more.

Brilliant Story, Narration lacking.

Anne's story is always brilliant, however I found the choice of McAdams for the narrator to be lacking for most of the novel. She reads Anne's dialog perfectly, capturing Anne's enthusiasm and energy in the tone. However all of the other characters' dialog, and the basic narration of the novel is pretty flat. There is little difference in their tone to be able to tell who is speaking without the story providing a name, if you were to be distracted in your listening.

Great Story.

This was my first encounter with Anne. Dialogue read wonderfully, narration was less than stellar.
