Publisher's summary
With all of the pluck and charm of its eponymous young hero, Rachel McAdams (The Notebook, Spotlight, Midnight in Paris) delivers a spectacular reading of Montgomery's beloved bildungsroman. In moments both funny and bittersweet, McAdams' voice is imbued with the spark that has made Anne a much-loved symbol of individualism and cheer for over a century. In this story of "kindred spirits", McAdams' touching and heartfelt narration proves she is just that - bonded on a deep level to this shimmering classic.
When aging brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan boy to help with chores around their farm, Green Gables on Prince Edward Island, neither is prepared for the feisty and imaginative redheaded girl who is mistakenly brought to them instead. Nor are they prepared for the way in which she will change their lives. Through a series of hilarious misadventures, Anne's uncompromising spirit makes her a striking presence in the close-knit village, bringing new friendships, first crushes, and, for her foster parents, a love and openness unimaginable before her arrival.

Story
Jenny is the story of Jenny Winge, a talented Norwegian painter who lives a free and independent life in Rome. Betraying her own ideals, she has an affair, resulting in a child out of wedlock, and decides to raise the child on her own. Undset gives a gripping portrayal of a woman struggling towards fulfillment and independence, who at the same time wrestles with mental problems. It is written with unflinching honesty, which makes her story as compelling today as it was nearly a century ago.

Story
Raised in post-Revolution Granville, Massachusetts, James Gould could only imagine the beauty and warmth of the lands to the south. It was there that he longed to build bridges and lighthouses from his very own designs and plans. His gripping story unfolds as Gould follows his dream to the raw settlement of Bangor on the Penobscot River, St. Simons Island off the coast of Georgia, lawless Spanish East Florida, and back - at last and finally - to St. Simons.

YOU CAN'T HELP BUT LOVE ANNE
It took me a little while to warm up to the chattiness of Anne but once I got used to it, I became charmed by her incessant optimism and love for life.
The poor little orphan girl blossoms in this classic tale and warms everyone's heart in the process. You either go along for the ride or resign yourself to being a grumpy curmudgeon. I preferred to go along for the ride and I was very happy I did.
Rachel McAdams does a nice job reading this novel, even if sometimes her reading feels a little flat. She tones down the annoying parts of Anne's personality, which is good, but it's sometimes hard to distinguish the different characters. Overall, the narration is pleasant and easy to understand.

Rachel McAdams Exceeds Expectations
From even the sample you can gauge that McAdams' voice is smooth and clear, and perfectly suited to this book. She glides through the narration, and tilts her voice excitedly for Anne and sternly somber for Marilla Cuthbert. Her voice is crisp and bright in the earphones, or makes for lovely musicality to lull you to sleep at night.
The story itself, if you aren't already connected to it from childhood, is a bit dull. By modern standards anyway. A young orphan girl is mistakenly sent to live with a couple, a brother and sister in their late fifties. They decide to keep her and then, ya know, life keeps happening from there.
It is refreshingly charming, a classic family delight. Just, don't expect a dramatic climax or a thrilling ride throughout the novel. Accept the enchantment of it for what it is.
And enjoy.

WHY, did I wait so long...??
This has been my redheaded daughters favorite book since she was “Anne’s” age, so finally at 51, prompted by her eager plea, I “read” it through the voice of Rachel.
By chapter 26 I found myself dreading its end, & fighting back a lump in my throat through the last 3.....by chapter 38, the tears had won.
My daughter, who is now 25, married & moved away, is Anne personified; and I’m not sure which, provoked them.
Rachel’s voice for me, has become the characters & done the passion from which the book was written, Justice. I so wish she had continued the series, as it won’t be easy settling into a new voice moving forward. Excellent work Rachel! Bring her back Audible.
