About this listen

Blackout Wars is about the historically unprecedented threat to our electronic civilization from its dependence on the electric power grid. Most Americans have experienced temporary blackouts, and regard them as merely an inconvenience. Some Americans have experienced more protracted local and regional blackouts, as in the aftermaths of Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina, and may be better able to imagine the consequences of a nationwide blackout lasting months or years, that plunges the entire United States into the dark.

In such a nightmare blackout, the entire population of the United States could be at risk. There would be no food. No water. Communications, transportation, industry, business, and finance - all of the critical infrastructures that support modern civilization and the lives of the American people would be paralyzed by collapse of the electric power grid.

Millions could die.

How could a catastrophic blackout happen? Threats to the electric power grid are posed by cyber-attack, sabotage, a geomagnetic super-storm, and electromagnetic pulse (EMP) from the high-altitude detonation of a nuclear weapon.

Blackout Wars warns that terrorists and rogue states are developing a revolutionary new military strategy that could exploit all of these threats in combination, including exploiting the opportunity of severe weather or a geo-storm, to collapse the national electric grid and all the critical infrastructures. It would be the fall of American civilization.

For the first time in history, the most dysfunctional societies, like North Korea that cannot even feed its own people, or even non-state actors like terrorists, could destroy the most successful societies on Earth - by means of a blackout war. Attacking the electric grid enables an adversary to strike at the technological and societal Achilles' heel of US military and economic power.

Blackout Wars likens this new revolution in military affairs to Nazi Germany's Blitzkrieg strategy, secretly developed and tested in low-profile experiments during the 1930s, sprung upon the Allies in 1939-1941 in a series of surprise attacks that nearly enabled the Third Reich to win World War II. Just as the West was asleep to the threat from the Blitzkrieg, so today US and Western elites are blind to the looming threat from a blackout war.

Audio books die a death of narration.

This book is amazing in content, poor in narration, but the subject matter is astounshing, so you don't mind the robotic reader. It opened my mind to how dependent we are on our fragile power grid. A simple solar flare, and we are back in the stone age.

Thorough Read

This book was the most excellent, thorough book that I have read on the asymmetric national security threat to the US yet.If you have the means please send copies to your local, state, and national representatives. Send some to your local utilities and hospitals as well.

Shameful how our government refuses to protect our population

Gives a lot of details one can reference. One is startled to learn the extent government officials and lobbyists will go to, to neglect to protect our country all in the name of money 😠 Great read.

Good information, bad editing, repetitive

Dr. Pry is very knowledgeable and informative no doubt and this is a good overview of the threat as well as potential solutions. However, he should have hired an editor. There are whole sections repeated time and time again as if they were just copied and pasted. The 10+ hour book could probably be 4-5 hours and cover the exact same content.

Great content!

Great content, and really important. A bit repetitive, but that is a good thing for people who are new to this issue.

The Protection is questionable

The fact you have to vote on protection regarding your very own safety to protect yourself from a threat a life and death matter is beyond me, should be automatically done slam dunk for grid protection for one day just the EMP comes suddenly millions will die from it all because you had to think on a vote yea and nay and decided funds go else where, at best less than 8% will survive in CONUS after first year EMP in North America.

Ctrl+C, Ctrl+P

(Edit: I have compared the audio to the text and the repetition is an issue with the recording only. There are complete sections, if not chapters, that are there more than once. The content is so good, but the audio production and editing ought to be fixed.)

I keep looking at my phone to see if the app glitched because there is SO MUCH repeated content. I don’t mean readdressing or reiterating points, I mean verbatim repeats a large amounts of content. Chapters 3 and 4 have the exact same ending. The content is extremely interesting, but it’s so distracting hearing the exact same things several times. Large portions of the book are also written by other people, like legislators from Maine or Arizona, and it includes other text copied and pasted. Good information, I think it could have just used some better editing.

This Narrator

Cant stand this narrator, his delivery is just off. This book also repeats itself a lot. Theres good information here but not anymore than you could get from a Yoitube deep dive. Not worth a credit, would probably be better to have as paperback or PDF.

Could have been better presented

This book contains such great information that it's a shame to see how poorly such information is presented to the reader or listener. As others have noted, the same content is repeated many times over. I ended up skipping large portions of the book just to be able to make it to the end.

Nevertheless, I still would recommend this books to others since it has some great insight into an otherwise little known topic.
