Publisher's summary

On March 12, 1888, hurricane-force winds and unrelenting snow began to bring the East Coast, from Virginia to Maine, to its knees. During the next three days, the Great Blizzard raged out of control, devastating every community in its path.

Through the eyes and words of survivors and victims alike, as well as the careful research for which Newberry Honor Award winner Jim Murphy is known, listeners will experience one of the most devastating natural disasters in U.S. history and understand why, from that day on, life in the United States was forever changed.

For family listening, ages 8 and up.

Surprising

I’d never heard of this storm, so the story was enlightening. I found the responses of the general population, and the social situation in sharp contrast to that of today’s population’s more entitled attitude. The narrator was excellent, and the flow of the narrative was smooth and easily followed

Shocking, astounding and heart breaking

Fascinating account that reveals the origin of a great many things taken for granted today in the big cities of the East Coast.

Worth listening for everyone, including schools.

not only is this story interesting and wonderful to listen due to a wonderful narrator it makes you reflect back as to what we have today and how they handled it then although they do include information in regards to later years to weather. I probably would listen to it again it was that interesting. parts of it are funny and then there are parts that are extremely sad enjoy.

Can't Stop

I could NOT stop listening. Story grasp at my heart and I found myself on my couch with several pillows and blankets all snuggled as if it was freezing. It is not freezing it is hot and humid with my AC running at a steady 68F degrees.

Worth a listen

I was surprised at how much material was contained in such a short book. It tells the story of the storm and some of the people who were affected by it.

Interesting historical account

Interesting story about history and meteorology. Nice short but educational. Thanks for the information. I remember the storm of 1993. Everything on the east coast was snow packed except the Hampton Roads area.

Cold! So Cold!!

Great short review of the Blizzard 1888. You get a strong sense of the determination of the people and the challenges they faced trying to do ordinary things.

Extensive research!

The last chapter really pull this altogether. Very enjoyable with the reader and his under-stated delivery.
