About this listen

When suburban Claudia Kincaid decides to run away, she knows she doesn't just want to run from somewhere; she wants to run to somewhere - to a place that is comfortable, beautiful, and preferably elegant. She chooses the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Knowing that her younger brother, Jamie, has money and thus can help her with the serious cash flow problem, she invites him along.

Once settled into the museum, Claudia and Jamie find themselves caught up in the mystery of an angel statue that the museum purchased at an auction for a bargain price of $250. The statue is possibly an early work of the Renaissance master Michelangelo, and therefore worth millions. Or is it? Claudia is determined to find out.

This quest leads Claudia to Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, the remarkable old woman who sold the statue, and to some equally remarkable discoveries about herself.

Critic reviews

"After reading this book, I guarantee that you will never visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art (or any wonderful, old cavern of a museum) without sneaking into the bathrooms to look for Claudia and her brother Jamie....Such is the impact of timeless novels...they never leave us. E. L. Konigsburg won the 1967 Newbery Medal for this tale." (Amazon.com review)

I was born in 1959, when I was in the 3rd grade, our librarian read this book to our class in weekly sessions… I was enthralled by this book. It was a fantasy that I’ll never forget! My Grandsons and I listened to it on a trip to the mountains this year, it was as fun as the first time I heard it.
All kids should read it…my childhood was not great. This book was a great diversion and gave me hope through imagination.
Thanks!

If you could sum up From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler in three words, what would they be?

Funny, engaging, heart-warming

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jamie was easily my favorite character as he somewhat reminded me of my own brothers. A little stubborn, very loyal and supportive, a realist. Oh bologna!

Which character – as performed by Jill Clayburgh – was your favorite?

Jill Clayburgh is the perfect Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. This is precisely how I imagined her to sound. Clayburgh reads the "afterward" with a perfect tone for E.L Koningsburgh as well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I can and have listened to this book all in one go. It makes me chuckle, reminisce about my childhood, appreciate my siblings and mother, and think about that moment when I felt more grown up, or "different" as Claudia says.

A humorous and enchanting coming of age story

I had read this MANY time while in the 3rd and 4th grades, and now I'm in my 50's... so... still a classic, still holds up, and in some ways funnier as I have a better perspective on Mrs Frankweiler... read really well (Jill Clayburgh, for those who don't know was one of the great academy award nominated at least, may have won one... actresses of the 1970's)

like visiting an old friend

One of my favorites. I'm so happy my daughter had to read this book for her 7th grade English class. I now have my own Claudia and Jamie at home ...they have different names and different quirky personalities, but they're just as lovable and entertaining as the kids in this book and I get to live it everyday. I will not miss THEM and I will not be too busy... I love them with all my heart and I'm blessed to be a part of their story.
I love this book!!

One of my all time favorites!!!
