About this listen

“Equal parts soaring fantasy, heart-pounding action, and bloody social commentary, Blood Scion is a triumph of a book.” —Roseanne A. Brown, New York Times bestselling author of A Song of Wraiths and Ruin

This is what they deserve.

They wanted me to be a monster.

I will be the worst monster they ever created.

Fifteen-year-old Sloane can incinerate an enemy at will—she is a Scion, a descendant of the ancient Orisha gods.

Under the Lucis’ brutal rule, her identity means her death if her powers are discovered. But when she is forcibly conscripted into the Lucis army on her fifteenth birthday, Sloane sees a new opportunity: to overcome the bloody challenges of Lucis training, and destroy them from within.

Following one girl’s journey of magic, injustice, power, and revenge, Deborah Falaye’s debut novel, inspired by Yoruba-Nigerian mythology, is a magnetic combination of Children of Blood and Bone and An Ember in the Ashes.

Sequel can’t release fast enough

I find it hard to believe this is Falaye first novel. After that cliffhanger ending I was tearing Google up searching for a sequel. The main character Sloane instantly finds a place in your heart, her naivety reminds you she is only a 15 year old girl. She makes many mistakes of the heart, in a world full of persecution. The only negative (that’s not a big issue) is the fact, that the story is only set over a month’s time. When time is mentioned it throws the storyline off slightly. So much is happening in such short period of time. Most stories that use the word “phases” use them to reference time generally months. Phases here is used in reference to test but could have easily be used in reference to time. Either way I enjoyed the read and I guess I’m patiently (not so patient) waiting for November 23rd for the sequel “War Widow”

An Amazing story

Overall, it was very captivating and a story with multiple twists and turns. I must say that there were some parts that were very hard to get through given the history of my people but still an astonishingly great story.

I enjoyed the story and the narrator. I hope it doesn't end there. I need to know where it goes from there.

This book is so, so good. Very eye opening and makes you consider perspectives that maybe most people don’t. Awesome hero story, great fantasy world, amazing storytelling. So, so good. Please read this book. And the narrator is *perfect* for the role. Five stars.

Very interesting debut

This is the first time I can say I loved the story but wasn’t a fan of the protagonist. To me she was very selfish and she sacrificed any and everyone that got in the way of accomplishing her goal. Even people who helped her out. She was quick to turn her back on other people to get were she needed to go but shocked when it was done back to her exp. Jericho, Nazanin, Amiyah/Izara and especially Téo but shocked when Omari/Dane betrayed her. Omari was correct when he said we are soldiers doing what we need to do. She did that to others but was hurt when they did it back. She was a child soldier yes but she could have said “no” just like Teo did. Plus she and Teo could have been powerful together if she wasn’t only after just saving herself!!
