About this listen
Cole Ryan is bored. He’s lived in the same small town his whole life and has the same job. Nothing changes there and every morning when he goes for a run, those thoughts echo on repeat through his mind. Until today, on this day, something big happens and if he survives it, his life won’t be the same. Maybe boring old Hickory Crossing wasn’t so bad after all.
Driving in the rain, on his way to a delivery, Bobby Sanders is focused on the road, when a flash of blue light in the distance catches his eye. He witnesses a bolt of lightning strike a man running on the road ahead of him. He never suspected that bolt of lightning could change both their lives, not just the poor guy who was blown out of his shoes right in front of him.
When the persistent sound of whispering won’t go away, Cole questions his sanity. But maybe he’s not the only one experiencing strange things.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Compiled by intrepid journalist Neve Pride, this archive of recordings spans the months after dragons emerged on earth, chronicling the communities that sprang up amid the destruction, the scientists, military leaders, and experts searching for a defense, and those steadfastly seeking the missing. Neve and her young daughter Bex travel among the wreckage speaking to those left behind and surviving, against all odds. Neve records everything for history, and in the hopes of locating a clue as to where the dragons came from and how one might stop them.

Story
David Lauriston is struggling to build his reputation in Edinburgh's privileged legal world. His humble origins are enough of a hurdle, never mind his recent decision to defend a group accused of treason, prompting speculation that he may harbour radical sympathies. David's personal life is no more successful. Tormented by his forbidden desires for other men, David tries to live a celibate existence. But then into David's repressed and orderly world bursts Lord Murdo Balfour. Cynical, hedonistic, and utterly unapologetic, Murdo could not be less like David.

The streets have been my home for as long as I can remember. To get by, I use my magic tricks, bringing smiles to the faces of adults and children alike. As a warlock, my powers are limited. Nothing like a witch's magical skills. Basically, I'm a glorified magician as well as a second-class citizen. Fine. It doesn't get me down. I have my cat Fizz and Kylie Minogue's music to keep me going as I dream big. I know there's a better life out there for me.

Being rejected by family hurt like hell, but I kept my head high, left my toxic relatives behind, and moved across the country to Gaynor Beach CA. Luckily, I have great furry company. My bulldog puppy, Widget, was dumped on me for not meeting my parents' ridiculously high standards either, so we're comforting each other. With a nice rental house, and a new job, Widget and I were ready for a fresh start, until I got a devastating diagnosis. I can't take care of Widget properly while trying to save my own life, and I expect a long hard road.

This year is my last chance to take the Titans to victory. I cost us the cup last year, but I'm not making the same mistake again. And I'm determined to get drafted by the end of this season. The success I anticipate is built on three years of razor-sharp focus and hard-earned respect. Not to mention how much of my personal life I sacrificed for hockey. The Titans trust me to lead them and I won't betray that. Nothing could possibly go wrong. Until the former love of my life and current arch nemesis, Cameron Martinez, skates back into my life.

Pixies are supposed to be petite, beautifully lithe creatures with gossamer wings. Sporting luscious, ombre pink hair and fluttering pink wings, Phil meets two out of three of those criteria. At over six feet tall, no one would dare call Phil petite. As a home-and-hearth pixie, Phil yearns to find a home and family he can bond to. When no one's willing to hire a pixie of his stature, Phil is forced to find work elsewhere. Turns out, pixies make terrible bouncers.

All I want is to leave my past behind and finally start living. My wish comes true in the most bizarre way imaginable. One evening, a beautiful man with pointy ears and flowing dark locks appears out of nowhere. He proclaims I am to be his 'Dark Companion' based on some stupid deal I made in a dream. Worse, thanks to his downward spiral, the addiction that’s nearly cost him his career before is rearing its ugly head. As luck would have it, though, the Seattle Sasquatches are desperate for goalies. When they snatch up Sol off waivers, maybe he has a chance to turn things around… if he can stay sober and get back on his game.

"The end or is it!
This is the first book I've read/listened to in this multi-authored series, Carnival of Mysteries. Normally a series like this would be right up my alley and I think it was the book covers that were messing with me, I don't really care for them. When this opportunity came up on Booksprout, to listen and review this story by BL Maxwell, I thought now is my opportunity to check it out. I'm so glad that I took this opportunity and now I'm interested in reading/listening to more books in this series.
When I read the book blurb and it said that one of the main characters gets hit by lightning I was all in. There were some parts that were a bit chilling and gave me some goosebumps. The narrator did a great job with the voices, this was the first book I've listened to by him. This is about the 4th or 5th book I've read or listened to by this author and I've really enjoyed all of them.
All in all it was a fun fairly short listen. It kept me in the story the entire time, which I loved. Some audio books I've listened to do not hold my attention so I'm always happy when I'm captivated.
I'd love to see this book made into its own series. I think this author could really do something with it.
Age gap, unlikely heroes, mysteries abound, you shouldn't mess around with things you don't understand, brings some heat

Destined For More
This one just kept getting more and more interesting the further I got into the story. I read through this quickly. I just had to see what was coming next for Cole and Bobby. It all made for an interesting and entertaining story. The audiobook made the story even more entertaining. I loved the narration by Guy Veryzer.
I received an ARC and this is my unbiased opinion

Blue Lightning: Carnival of Mysteries by BL Maxwell This audiobook delivers a captivating blend of suspense, romance, and paranormal intrigue. Cole and Bobby's paths cross in the most shocking way—literally—and their lives change forever. The small-town setting of Hickory Crossing is richly detailed, making the supernatural twists feel grounded and eerie. The narration brings out the tension and emotional depth of the story, especially Cole’s struggles with sanity and Bobby's determination to help him. The chemistry between the protagonists adds warmth to the dark, mysterious plot, while the whispering voices and psychic elements keep you hooked. If you love small-town paranormal tales with a dash of gay romance and a touch of the supernatural, this audiobook is a must-listen.

Loved it
I loved Blue Lightning (Carnival of Mysteries) and struggled to put it down. Guy Veryzer's voice really brings this story to life. The story is amazing and I enjoyed reading Cole Ryan and Bobby Sanders' story.

Blue Lightning
First time I have heard this narrator and enjoyed the introduction. Easy to distinguish the various characters.
Small town resident Cole is struck by lightning when out jogging. Bobby, out for a drive, witnesses this and stood to help. After this introduction the pair discover what blue lightning is and how to use it. New friends and love found along their new path.

Good
I enjoyed this book. The storyline was interesting and I loved the whole mystery of it. A character getting hit by lightning- blue lightning for that matter- was an interesting enough way to bring the two guys together. But when Bobby brings Cole to the hospital, it's anything but ordinary. Gods, magic, mediums. These two certainly went on a journey. I also liked their families and the supporting characters.
Guy Veryzer did a good job narrating this book (though I needed to listen to it with an increased speed because at normal speed he just sounds too slow.)
