In the mid-19th century, Leonie Russell works alongside her husband, Junius, an oysterman in the Washington Territory. At night she continues her father’s lifelong obsession - collecting artifacts and studying the native culture that once thrived in the area.

On her 37th birthday, Leonie discovers a mummy protruding from a riverbank - a mummy that by all evidence shouldn’t exist. Overall, this book was a wonderful historic novel! The reader’s performance added realism, emotion, and believability to the story! I love that the story was located in a region of Washington state that I am very familiar with. I could envision each landmark and was able to imagine the characters’ experiences! I loved this book!

This was a really good story! The setting so is beautifully described, one would think they were in the past in Washington State. The theme of the story is finding one's identity, and once finding it the challenge is to either accept the new identity or hold on to the old one.

This felt like a movie playing in my head. Great storytelling. 👍

The story, enjoyable. The narrator is somewhat monotone and the annoyingly breathy reading really was the worst part. I literally had to skip chapters it was so annoying 😑 Cool plot twist though.

I liked the way "the experiment" wasn't mentioned until well into the story. And the way it wasn't explained until the end. There was a nice blend of science and different cultures in the book.

This has to be one of the best stories I've heard lately. Leonie Russell's world is turned upside down, when she discovers a mysterious mummy in the river close to her home. She and her husband Junius find Indian artifacts for a buyer from the Smithsonian. This mummy however, has a message for Leonie that unsettles the life she has known for the past twenty years and she's in no rush to give her up.
Clue after clue surfaces in this tale and had me speculating throughout as to what the mummy was trying to covey. Then when a link to Jun's past appears at the door, everything completely unravels in everybody's world.
I loved these characters and the world they lived in was so descriptive you can imagine being there.
Completely deprived me of sleep, as I couldn't put it down.

This was a good book that started a little slow but got more exciting toward the end. Some surprises made it a good read. The narrator was almost like AI. Monotone and no inflections or voice changes for different characters. That took away from the pleasure listening to this book.
