About this listen

From New York Times bestselling author Amy Harmon comes the saga of a young woman who dares to chart her own destiny in life and love during the American Revolutionary War.

In 1760, Deborah Samson is born to Puritan parents in Plympton, Massachusetts. When her father abandons the family and her mother is unable to support them, Deborah is bound out as an indentured servant. From that moment on, she yearns for a life of liberation and adventure.

Twenty years later, as the American colonies begin to buckle in their battle for independence, Deborah, impassioned by the cause, disguises herself as a soldier and enlists in the Continental Army. Her impressive height and lanky build make her transformation a convincing one, and it isn’t long before she finds herself confronting the horrors of war head-on.

But as Deborah fights for her country’s freedom, she must contend with the secret of who she is—and, ultimately, a surprising love she can’t deny.

Critic reviews

“Based on a real person and filled with factual details and characters, this deeply engrossing novel is performed flawlessly by Tavia Gilbert.… Gilbert is simply splendid recounting Deborah's cleverness. She shines delivering the letters Deborah writes but never sends, letters revealing the horrors of war, her growing attachment to General Patterson, and her affection for the men in her outfit. Wonderfully well written and expertly narrated, this is a must-listen.” —AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

“Of particular interest to fans of historical romance novels…brought vividly to life in a deftly narrated edition by the vocal storytelling talents of Tavia Gilbert.” —Midwest Book Review

“This is a thought-provoking, deeply moving read in which a patriotic woman, forbidden from serving her country due to her sex, defies all odds to do it anyway. Harmon’s riveting narrative allows Samson’s bravery, both on and off the battlefield, to soar from the pages of long-forgotten history.” —Historical Novels Review

Good read

A fictional book based on the Revolutionary War and the life of Deborah Sampson. The story is well written and caused me to do a little reach into the life of Deborah Sampson and John Patterson who were both Revolutionary War heros that I knew nothing about prior to this book. Worth readin

Wonderful

Very moving story about one woman’s struggle to be viewed as an equal to men. Maybe one day her dreams will be every woman’s reality.

Great book, never knew this fascinating piece of history!

The story was engaging from the beginning. I thought it was really interesting as well as inspiring and awe producing. It makes me appreciative for our freedoms and for a great woman who was way ahead of her time.

Phenomenal

This book is absolutely captivating. This historical fiction speaks of a woman in the revolutionary war. Her bravery & the history that the author portrays in this book is so moving I will never forget it. How awful war is. Here Amy Harmon does not just show us the horrors of war, but shows the flip side of it, which is love. When you live hard & life is at stake, you also love hard, unconditionally and completely. I love this book, Amy Harmon and Tavia, Gilbert!

Slow start but fantastic, not to miss!

I almost didn’t read this because of the slow start. But a friend told me he loved it so I knew I must read. And how fantastic! These HerStories that are buried—must come alive. I’m grateful to the authors who breathe fresh life into them so that we can know.

What happens when a girl, indentured to a family with many boys, comes of age during a Revolution? Read and find out.

I was pulled in and kept captive

I really loved this story. it reminded me that even though I've been caught up in Tudor history for the past several years, early American history was always my first love. The narrator was fantastic, really imaginative, and easily sold the characters to me. I lived and loved and dreamed about the bits I'd heard until I could come back. I honestly was just looking for something to fill in the hours, not something that would invade every minute.

Even though I don't feel like Deborah, I feel like I wanted to be a fly on the wall everywhere she went.

Wonderful?

This is a wonderful story full of gripping characters that make you fall in love with them. The author has done a fantastic job bringing them to life and, according to the authors note, she’s done a marvelous job giving Deborah the honor she deserves. Beautiful performance as well!
