About this listen

From New York Times bestselling author Amy Harmon comes the saga of a young woman who dares to chart her own destiny in life and love during the American Revolutionary War.

In 1760, Deborah Samson is born to Puritan parents in Plympton, Massachusetts. When her father abandons the family and her mother is unable to support them, Deborah is bound out as an indentured servant. From that moment on, she yearns for a life of liberation and adventure.

Twenty years later, as the American colonies begin to buckle in their battle for independence, Deborah, impassioned by the cause, disguises herself as a soldier and enlists in the Continental Army. Her impressive height and lanky build make her transformation a convincing one, and it isn’t long before she finds herself confronting the horrors of war head-on.

But as Deborah fights for her country’s freedom, she must contend with the secret of who she is—and, ultimately, a surprising love she can’t deny.

Critic reviews

“Based on a real person and filled with factual details and characters, this deeply engrossing novel is performed flawlessly by Tavia Gilbert.… Gilbert is simply splendid recounting Deborah's cleverness. She shines delivering the letters Deborah writes but never sends, letters revealing the horrors of war, her growing attachment to General Patterson, and her affection for the men in her outfit. Wonderfully well written and expertly narrated, this is a must-listen.” —AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Winner

“Of particular interest to fans of historical romance novels…brought vividly to life in a deftly narrated edition by the vocal storytelling talents of Tavia Gilbert.” —Midwest Book Review

“This is a thought-provoking, deeply moving read in which a patriotic woman, forbidden from serving her country due to her sex, defies all odds to do it anyway. Harmon’s riveting narrative allows Samson’s bravery, both on and off the battlefield, to soar from the pages of long-forgotten history.” —Historical Novels Review

A most extraordinary tale, masterfully written

What an incredible story of bravery, breaking boundaries and pursuing your dreams. I simply could not put this book down. the characters are gloriously written with substance and detail.

A special mention to the narrator, absolutely out of this world. The voices, the passion, the fear the cadence, the sorrow and the love portrayed was like listening to a Hollywood movie. I cried, I laughed and sat waiting in suspense for each storyline to unfold. So far my favourite book of 2023.

Amqzing!

I have adored Amy Harmon's books for many years. The first one I read a few years back, From Sand and Ash, made me a fan for life. I read nearly 400 books a year, so many do not stick with me. A Girl Called Samson may well be my new favorite of Amy Harmon's! Plus, the narration was very good...especially for Gippy! (I do wish she had put a little more bass into some of the male roles).
If you love strong female protagonists and historical fiction, give this a try!

Fascinating!

I never would have thought that a historical fiction/romance would become a favorite listen, but Amy Harmon has spun a beautiful tale, based in much truth, set during the Revolutionary War. The details are fascinating and the narration unmatched. A Girl Called Samson is not to be missed.

Amy Harmon does it again!

I always say “I don’t really like Historical Fiction” But here comes Amy making a liar out of me again! I get so wrapped up in her stories and characters that I’m sad to see them end. Wonderful narration too!

Like history? Love this book

Deborah Samson passed for a man in the Revolutionary War for 18 months. There are many real people and historical events to be experienced. The author’s comments at the end of the book are also of great interest.

Wonderful!

I loved this book. It’s beautifully written as are all of Ms Harmon’s books. I learned much about the Revolutionary War but the real story is about the yearning within a woman’s soul to fulfill her destiny. This is the story of all women throughout the ages. It is a rich and sensitive tale.

Engaging story

I was eager to get back to listening to this book every afternoon. The story was fascinating, one I was totally unaware of. The narrator gave an outstanding performance, drawing in the listener and making the listen “ live” the emotions that A. Harmon wrote about. I highly recommend A Girl Called Samson.”

Great novel!

I fell in love with Deborah and I love that the sown of her life was covered. In today's world women still fight for their rights, I’m glad Deborah fought for hers.
