About this listen

They're destined to fall in love... if they don't kill each other first.

Violet “Vy” Finch
is a vampire cursed, for the very blood she needs is poison to her. Suffering unquenchable hunger and shunned for being of mixed lineage, Vy searches desperately for her mother who disappeared over a decade ago—the one person who may be able to heal her. Unfortunately, a great sorceress prophesies that Vy will only get what she wants if Petra Malkovitch willingly works with her to find a magical relic with the power to change everything.

Petra Malkovitch is an assassin. A member of the Order of Light—a shadowy organization that hunts supernatural creatures for profit—she wants only to kill the vampire who took away the last of her family. When Petra's attempt on Vy's life is thwarted, she is shocked when her greatest enemy tells her that they can rewrite their pasts if they team up.

But is a common goal enough to bring them together, or will betrayal happen at the earliest opportunity?

Blending the adventure and magic of Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson books, the wit and enchantment of Ilona Andrews’ Magic Bites series, and the soul-stirring romance of Laurell K. Hamilton’s Guilty Pleasures novels, Born of Blood and Magic is a thrilling, fun, sexy, urban fantasy unlike anything you’ve ever listened to before. Thoroughly enjoyed

I knew this would be an interesting story. It’s the first book and I can easily see many more to come. I was pleasingly surprised by how different this book is. I can’t wait for the next one.

A Thrilling, Dark, and Spicy Enemies-to-Lovers Urban Fantasy

Born of Blood and Magic by M.C. Hutson is an absolute treat for fans of urban fantasy with strong characters, sizzling romance, and dark, compelling storytelling. Narrator Laura Horowitz does an incredible job bringing this story to life—her performance is so vivid and engaging that it felt like watching a movie play out in my head. Seriously, can we get this adapted into a show? Showtime or Starz, are you listening? Let’s make it happen!

This story hooked me from the start with its hella enemies-to-lovers dynamic. Violet “Vy” Finch is a cursed vampire with a heartbreaking backstory, searching for her missing mother while battling constant hunger and rejection. Petra Malkovitch is an assassin hell-bent on avenging her family, who’s been destroyed by vampires. Their clash is intense, their chemistry undeniable, and the result is both explosive and deeply emotional. I loved how Petra tries so hard to cling to her hate, while Vy’s vulnerability and resilience force her to reconsider. The moments where they let their guard down are pure magic.

And let’s talk about the spice—this is not a slow burn. Their attraction is fiery, and Hutson lets it burn, weaving in steamy scenes early on amidst the tension and conflict. The mix of undeniable chemistry, mutual distrust, and reluctant teamwork makes their dynamic electric, and I couldn’t get enough of their push-and-pull relationship.

The world-building and lore are fascinating, adding layers of depth to the story. This isn’t just Vy and Petra’s show; we get multiple POVs, giving us a richer understanding of the characters and their motives. The magic and mythology are solidly crafted, with dark undertones that explore power, hatred, and the consequences of pursuing what you think you want. It’s gritty and emotional without being gratuitously brutal, and the way the characters grow throughout the story is so satisfying.

This is M.C. Hutson’s debut novel, and I’m beyond impressed. The writing, the pacing, the character development—everything hits the mark. However, fair warning: it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger. I’m officially invested, and I’m counting the days until book two drops! (Book two - calling for book two ASAP)

If you’re into urban fantasy with sharp characters, dark themes, spicy romance, and a dash of cinematic flair, Born of Blood and Magic is a must-listen. Laura Horowitz’s narration elevates it even further, making it an unforgettable audiobook experience. READY FOR BOOK 2!!!
